It hadn’t been the best getaway, but it was sure interesting at any rate. She and Meleager had managed to make it work in the end. With kitten in her carrier Atalanta jogged over to Jason’s place for the hand off.

“Captain! My Captain!” She knocked the door open with her foot, keys are for people who haven’t been wandering through the wilderness for weeks, and laughed a vibrant laugh. “Miss me?”

The minute Jason heard Atalanta's voice, he went and opened the door. Hey, he wanted his kitten. "Of course I did." He ushered her inside and threw an arm over her shoulder. "The more important question is: did you miss me? Because I'm pretty sure you need me in your life."

His grin grew as he knelt down to look into the carrier. Oh gods, she was so cute. And why was he acting like such a girl over this kitten?

“Oh, I missed you something fierce, Captain,” she opened the door to the carrier carefully. Kitten was frightened of every shadow, but Atalanta had a good feeling that she would warm up to Jason. And who knows, it might do him some good to have something to care about. “You get into all kinds of trouble without me.”

The cat made an indignant sound.

Jason carefully reached in and cradled the kitten as he brought her out. Holding her up to look him in the eyes he manfully cooed said hello, running his finger back over her head. Even her meow was cute.

"I name you Xena. It's set in stone now."

The shake of her head may have indicated she didn't like it. Too bad.

"Speaking of trouble..."

Aww, well wasn’t that the cutest thing? Jason should take his new friend with him into board meetings; he’d make a mint. “Xena. I like it.”

The change in tone made her happiness halt. By Artemis, what had he done while she was away? She raised her eyebrow at him expectantly and did the hand gesture of ‘continue’. Hopefully he only got a tattoo.

Xena was placed in his lap as he moved to the chair. This was not news to given while standing. (Atalanta could punch hard.) Letting her chase his finger around was easier then looking at Atalanta and waiting for the horror that would come.

"Well, while don't you sit down and then I'll tell you." He grinned his most innocent of grins. Disarming her was best.

Atalanta knew him well enough that his attempts at soothing were having the opposite effect. She scowled absentmindedly and folded her arms, a warning system. Like a tiger growl, before the inevitable pounce that would lead to a meal. “Think maybe I’d better stand.”

"So. I asked Neoptolemus and Polyxena to marry me."

Maybe if he hid behind the kitten...

And with that Atalanta began to laugh. “Captain!”

“I thought-“ Oh Gods her heart, she knew now why he wanted her to sit down, she was laughing so hard she was practically wheezing. “Don’t tease me like that now, Polyxena takes that sort of thing real serious like, I was real worried bout you and and ha-“

She imagined Jason, with no ulterior motive, genuinely doing that, and she had to laugh all over again.

He raised an eyebrow at her. Well, he hadn't seen that coming, even though he should have. Joking was their main form of communication and he did yank her chain a lot.

"I'm not joking, Ata. Polyxena, at least, had said yes and is wearing the ring right now. Neoptolemus still needs to be hunted down but I'm sure he will agree."

He was, he couldn’t possibly, not to be so dense as to think-

“… Stand up.”

Fuck. He lifted Xena up so he could whisper into her ear that she shouldn't worry, Daddy would be fine before he put her down. As he stood, he began to question himself about why a freaking woman from his crew was making him be such a wimp when he remembered it was Atalanta and she was his sister, essentially.

His best friend who he wanted to approve of this (even though he knew she wouldn't) so he was going to take what she gave him. When he finally straightened all the way, he looked down at her, raising his eyebrow.

It didn’t matter that he was facing her like a man. Didn’t matter that he was Captain. All he was at this very moment was a little boy who knew that his problems prevented him from being a good long-term romantic partner, who still willingly intentionally got himself into that situation. Got himself involved with people who would want what he didn’t have the capacity to give. Sex, sure. Fine. But pretending it was anything more? Marriage?

Her anger burned like a supernova, and with that thought burning into her brain Atalanta firmly smacked a bitch.

Jason's head was thrown to the side and he staggered a bit. Well, he couldn't say he hadn't deserved that. He straightened and wiped the corner of his mouth, breathing deeply to calm himself so he didn't hit her back.

Starting a brawl wouldn't solve anything.

Instead, he just said quietly, "I do genuinely care for them, you know. More so then I ever did for Medea."

Atalanta still had too much energy, dangerous energy, she began to pace back and forth. Her accent was thicker than usual. “Well that ain’t hard.”

“Just,” she swore under her breathe for a few minutes. “tell me. Do you want what marriage means now a days, Jason? You want to wake up beside the same two folks till the day you die? Or do you want to fuck a pretty woman’s brains out?”

"I do know what marriage means." He doesn't add that there being two people instead of one person is what makes it more interesting for him. More appealing. "And you know that, for all of my selfishness, all of my greed, I am willing to do anything for those I care about."

"I never cared for Medea, so I didn't go out of my way to treat her as crew, let alone as a wife." A sigh escaped him. Gods, that woman would haunt him until the day he died. "The fucking, yeah, that's part of it, but I wouldn't try to marry her just so I could get into her bed."

Stress headache: imminent. “I know that, Jason. I know you’re the most carin man anyone could ask for. But you’re also the most selfish, the most easily bored. So no, I don’t think you know what marriage is supposed to mean.”

“And shit, Jason!” Atalanta flung her hands up in frustration. “I never mentioned that woman! I don’t have to! Polyxena and Neop are both too sensible for that bullshit I ‘ll tell you what. That man of your might just rough you up a little, but they’ll have more scars than you.“

“Tell me why then. Why on earth do you want to get married?”

"Originally, I didn't want to," he said quietly. "But then Cronus made me feel like marriage was the most important thing-and before you say anything, I didn't ask them just because of Cronus's douchebaggery."

He rubbed the bridge of his nose to try and ward off a headache. "I thought about it, long and hard, after I originally asked them due to Cronus. Even though I felt that way, I knew normally I wouldn't. I just...I compared what kind of asshole I was without them and what kind I was with them and I wanted them in my life. With me forever."

Shit, he was being sappy. "And if you know I'm so carin' then you know I wouldn't hurt them deliberately. This time it's different."

Atalanta would sit down now thank you. Sigh into her hands. “This time it’s different he says. Well ain’t that somethin?”

There was a long pause that followed as she thought. Eventually she smiled, a tight little thing. Oh, Jason. She’s just grateful that you’re trying. “You three love birds gonna have yourselves a Vegas wedding?”

"Don't fuckin' know," he said right before he let out a relieved sigh. She wasn't going to kill him. "It's not really a legal marriage any way we go about it, so I'll either legally marry Polyxena and have a 'ceremony'-with Hera...oh I should probably speak to her about that-for the three of us or we'll just do the ceremony."

He sat down next to her and wrapped his arm around her shoulder. "You're my best man though."

Atalanta grinned at that. That’s what best men do, they grin even when everything goes to hell. “I’m real honored, Jason.”

"Nah, you're pissed still." Jason knew her well enough to at least assume that. It would be safer that way. "But you're still my best friend so I'll get you to forgive me."

“Eh, you can make it up to me if I ever decide to get married.” She shoved into him gently. “You’ll know by them flyin pigs goin around.”

"See, from what I heard, you got yourself married and liked it later on in life." Jason shoved her back and bent down to scoop up his kitten again. Best. Present. Ever.

Atalanta got up to help herself to some alcohol. “Just pet the cat, Cap. It’ll all be just fine.”
