Timeline: あたしって、ほんとバカ • A few miliseconds before Sayaka becomes a witch.
Personality:
"With kindness comes naïveté. Courage becomes foolhardiness. And dedication has no reward. If you can't accept any of that, you are not fit to be a magical girl."
At first, Sayaka appears to be quite the tomboy. She's the energetic and lively girl with a smile, spending most of her days laughing with Hitomi and teasing Madoka. Sayaka is definitely the loud one in their little trio, with her exaggerated gestures and often loud ramblings. But with this outgoing attitude also comes with the courage to stand up and be heard. She's very protective of her friends, especially to her "future waifu" Madoka, whom she has constantly fought for even when they were kids. Lack of magical powers won't stop her from fighting either - not only did she bravely attacked Homura with a fire extinguisher, she is also willing to beat up familiars herself even while inside a witch's barrier, even when she is truthfully scared. Sayaka has the heart of a hero who would always help other people as much as she could.
She is more than some hare-brained chivalrious woman though - despite having quite the loud personality, Sayaka also has her reflective moments, and she does show that she thinks about her decisions thoroughly. She has neither good street smarts or academic skills, but she knows how to look at herself and evaluate her values, even scolding herself for doing things she knew to be wrong. Sayaka is one who is born and raised to always do the right thing, even if the right thing would make things worse for her. She is one with a near black-and-white view on life, refusing to associate with anyone she believes to have the wrong motives or the wrong methods. She does stand up for what she believes is right, but she is also stubborn. Sayaka's hot tempter may be the central source of most of her fights.
But something has changed in Sayaka lately - gone was the idealist who swore to protect everyone as much as she could. Recent revelations has fallen her to despair, and while her companions may save her from turning into a witch, the damage is irreparable. Sayaka posseses an unstable psyche, always depressed, always seen to herself as useless. She tries her best to look happy or even arrogant, just so other won't worry about her. It's hard to see yourself as someone worth caring for when you're nothing but a glowing rock that controlls a piece of flesh. Sayaka has been pulled to the extremes, her values constantly tested - it will be no surprise to anyone should Sayaka show any darker tones when confronting an enemy. She will try to pull herself together and redeem herself in Adstringendum, but doing things alone can only take her so far.
Background:
Sayaka is one of Madoka Kaname's best friends - in fact, she's a childhood friend and frequent classmate who never fails to protect Madoka at any cost. Only two other friends prove to have the same closeness with Sayaka - Hitomi Shizuki and Kyousuke Kamijou. Let's concentrate first on Kyousuke Kamijou, shall we?
He's also another childhood friend of Sayaka's, and he is a genius when it comes to playing the violin. Sayaka frequently visits his concerts and has fallen in love with his violin play, eventually asking Kyousuke much about classical music. This admiration bloomed into a crush, and Sayaka hopes that her affections may be returned someday. But then, there was a terrible accident, leaving Kyousuke with broken arms and legs. Rehabilitation may repair most of the damage, but fully healing his hands - and, in turn, his future as a violisnist - is a miracle he may need to pray for. Sayaka, however, visits him as much as possible, trying to cheer him up and frequently buying rare CDs for him.
One time, as she was shopping for a CD, her companion, Madoka, suddenly took off. Sayaka, of course, had to follow her, and what she saw was a strange sight - Madoka with something like a wounded stuffed animal on her hands, and their mysterious transfer student who seemed to be targeting said stuffed animal.... in costume. Sayaka managed to distract the transfer student with a nearby fire extinguisher, and she and Madoka escaped - only to end up in a strange new environment with dancing daffodils with moustaches. They would have been killed if not for the timely appearance of one of their upperclassmen, who apparently had the ability to change clothes and summon a huge number of muskets.
The girl introduced herself a Mami Tomoe, a Puella Magi, just like the transfer student who was tailing them (Homura Akemi). After chasing Homura away, Mami started to explain everything - that she is a magical girl who is tasked to defeat witches in exchange for one wish, provided by the so-called stuffed animal, Kyubey. Apparently Kyubey has chosen Madoka and Sayaka to be candidates for becoming Puella Magi and wanted to form a contract with them straightaway. Mami, however, had other plans in mind, because she wanted Sayaka and Madoka to think carefully upon their wishes. At the meantime, the two are free to observe her to her job - vanquish witches.
Several days passed, and so far Mami has been able to destroy one witch and several familiars ever since Madoka and Sayaka joined her. Everything was doing well for our little group until a witch started to appear nearby the hospital Kyousuke was in. Sayaka stayed behind to keep watch on the witch as Madoka went to fetch Mami - she can't let this witch go loose, after all. Fortunately, Mami came back just in time, but then something far more terrible happened - the witch was able to outwit Mami and, in front of Madoka's and Sayaka's eyes, it ate her. Once again the helpless duo would have died, but fortunately Homura appeared at the nick of time to defeat the witch. Homura left them a warning - this is danger they would face should they become magical girls.
Sayaka, however, was still deep in thought. She already was starting to think of a wish - to heal Kyousuke's hand. But Mami said to be careful in choosing their wishes - was Sayaka going to use that wish because she really wanted Kyousuke to play again, or was it because she wanted Kyousuke to return her affections? One visit to the hospital changed everything - apparently all hope was lost for Kyousuke's arm. It would take miracles and magic to heal it.
"Miracles and magic do exist!" Sayaka insisted, and that is how she became a Puella Magi.
And right in time, too, for both Hitomi and Madoka were stuck deep in a witches' barrier, and both of them would have died if Sayaka didn't come in time. With her beginner's luck, Sayaka decided to follow Mami's footsteps and become the defender of Mitakihara Town. Unfortunately for her, she would also have to compete against two other Puella Magi - Homura Akemi, and a newcomer to the town, Kyouko Sakura.
Sayaka and Kyouko didn't meet on the best of terms - Sayaka believed that even familiars must be disposed off immediately, while Kyouko wanted them to kill a couple of people and mature into witches first, such that they would drop a Grief Seed should it die. The conflict of beliefs convinced Sayaka that other Puella Magi aren't warriors of justice after all - they're just on it for themselves. Eventually Sayaka and Kyouko ended up clashing - the first time was interrupted by Homura's timely appearance, and the second time was halted thanks to Madoka's brave act of disposing Sayaka's Soul Gem.
...Only it made things worse, for Sayaka's Soul Gem is Sayaka, and the entire truth dawned upon them as Sayaka's "body" lay dead. Homura was successful in retrieving the Soul Gem back, but the damage is done. All Puella Magi are zombies, more or less. Kyouko began to sympathize and care for Sayaka, and revealed that they both made the same mistake - using their wishes for other people. While Sayaka started to have a better impression of Kyouko, she still refused to take her advice, insisting that she would only use her powers for others. She left Kyouko alone, with a new determination and a clearer conscience. It didn't do her any good.
Still remember Hitomi? Madoka and Sayaka's mutual friend and almost victim of the latter's first witch? Guess what - she has a crush on Kyousuke, too. Hitomi, however, knew Sayaka's crush on Kyousuke as well, so she gave her friend one ultimatum: Sayaka has exactly twenty-four hours to confess to Kamijou. If Sayaka doesn't do it, Hitomi will. Thing is, Sayaka's a Puella Magi, a monster, a zombie. In her eyes, she can no longer face Kamijou.
Thus began Sayaka's downward spiral towards insanity. She stopped attending classes, and directed herself in a suicidal mission to destroy as many witches as possible - she believed that once she stopped purifying her Soul Gem, she will surely die. She refused to receive help from anyone, and even shunned her best friend Madoka. Homura, who knew what exactly would happen, tried to stop this self-desructive behavior by first offering Sayaka a Grief Seed and later trying to kill her, but to no avail. Eventually she got onto a train, where another harsh truth reached her ears - there was a conversation of two men on the train, treating their women as nothing but cattle. This made Sayaka snapped - Are people really worth protecting?
Kyouko eventually found her, but it was all too late - Sayaka was in deep despair. She knew now - in exchange for the hope she has given to others, she now harbors sorrow inside herself, and now her Soul Gem was fully corrupted with curses. "I've been such a fool", she says, and her Soul Gem begins to break, about to give birth to a new witch.
Sayaka closed her eyes, knowing nothing but despair and darkness.
Abilities/Additional Notes:
Sayaka is a Puella Magi - a magical girl who must fight witches in exchange for her wish. Usually the Puella Magi's abilities are related to her wish. In Sayaka's case, her wish was to cure Kyousuke Kamijou's hand, and as such she is capable of self-healing and high endurance, although more serious injuries may take a longer while to heal. These two factors may assist her during battle as well - Sayaka can also block out her senses, including her ability to feel physical pain. Her main weapon are Cutlasses, and much like Mami she can easily CREATE UNLIMITED BLADE WORKS make a huge number of them appear from her cape. Of course, when you have access to a huge pile of swords, you also have the tendency to sometimes throw them at enemies, rather than to swing them around as usual. She is also capable of communicating through other Puella Magi or Puella Magi candidates through telepathy, provided that they are at a close distance.
Of course, being a Puella Magi, Sayaka can't be killed if only her body is destroyed - that's nothing but a lifeless tool. A Puella Magi's weak point is her Soul Gem, which is basically the Puella Magi herself. If that is destroyed, Sayaka gets killed as well. Furthermore, her Soul Gem must be nearby her previous body for less than a hundred meters, or else the Soul Gem would be incapable of moving her body, making it look like that the magical girl is actually dead. Furthermore, Soul Gems have their limit - the more a Puella Magi uses her powers, the darker the color her Soul Gem becomes. The darker the Soul Gem, the less controlled and the less sane the Puella Magi becomes. If the Soul Gem becomes too corrupted, it turns into a Grief Seed, giving birth to a witch. The only way to keep a Soul Gem from being too corrupted is to harvest other Grief Seeds and letting it absorb the darkness from the Soul Gem.
Sayaka doesn't have many talents outside the magical girl business, but she has proven to be athletic enough to be willing to beat up familiars even before she was a magical girl. Furthermore, she has extensive knowledge of classical music to the extent that even her transformation sequence has a musical motif.

[ a familiar horizon of the wasteland - that is where this recording starts. the sky is tainted with bleak orange as the sun draws closer to the west, and there is no living person in sight - save one.
a few meters away is an unfamiliar child, lying on the barren ground. she is wearing nothing but a school uniform, a common ensemble for middle school students. after a while the blue-haired girl stirrs. ]
What... [ she pauses, and then she sits up in a jolt. ] Am I dead? Does that mean -
[ a faint blue glow emerges, and a gem appears on her hand. it's barely visible from the distance, but a sharp eye can notice the
murky dark hue it posesses. the young girl's face draws in a sad smile. ]
...Oh. Guess not.
[ she grasps the gem tightly, and soon the glow disappears. there was a lonely silence, and it looked like the girl was crying. but she wiped her tears, and began to stand up. ]
Oh no, that won't do. Pull yourself together, Sayaka! You're still up and alive with your legs kicking, so you better make it count! Alright, we're in the middle of some unfamiliar place of land... Ahahaha, that's not a good sign, is it?
Now, where do we start...?
[ she begins to walk at the surrounding area, and as she comes closer to the PCD, the feed comes to a close. ]
Sample RP:
She thought she was dead. Heck, it would have been better if she was dead.
Sayaka only realized how stupid she was at the very last moment - it was far too late, and now she did something far more terrible. All this magical girl stint, promising to protect everybody without asking for anything in return... She didn't fullfill that promise, did she? She made Madoka cry, she ignored Akemi-san and Kyouko's warnings, and now she's giving everybody else trouble - all because she was a jealous girl who didn't get the affections she wished for.
But now, there's this miracle - if she can even call this a miracle. For some reason she's now in the middle of nowhere, but now she's not turning into a witch. But why, she wondered. Her Soul Gem was already corrupted enough.
"Aaaah, I wasn't that good at thinking about these deep stuff!" Sayaka yelled at no one in frustation. She can't hardly make sense of anything! If only Mami-san was here... Mami-san...
"That's right, I wanted to be like Mami-san." Someone really cool and really strong - a good protector of Mitakihara Town. It's all too late for her, but at least, if she can act to be like Mami-san, it will be better for everyone else. That's right - she needs to have a more positive outlook, even if it's only for the sake of her closest friends. "Alright, time to get going, Sayaka! We're fixing everything up such that Madoka can smile again!"
Unknown to her, the blue gem on her ring started to glow a bit brighter.
