Summary: "I don't believe in coincidence, sweetheart."
"Miss?" Kate looks up at the light tap on her shoulder, a little blonde nurse smiling at her in a way that makes her uncomfortable but she can't quite figure out why. "Come with me, please," she says, gesturing to the door that led to another room full of hospital beds separated by flimsy blue curtains. "The man you brought in is doing fine now. He's been asking to see you from the moment he got here. Wants to know who he's in debt to, he says. It's really lucky that you found him when you did. Our spinal surgeon took excellent care of him and he should be back to normal in a few weeks. He just finished examining him actually, so you can go in now."
"Oh, thank you," she says, only half listening to the nurse as they approach the other end of the room.
A man in pale blue scrubs looks up from a chart, a tangle of words ready to fall from his lips until he sees her. Something like recognition appears in his eyes and he smiles. "We met on the plane, right? Oceanic--"
"Flight 815. Right outside the bathroom," she finishes, her lips curving slightly. She remembers. She needed a few minutes away from the marshal accompanying her from Australia back to the States and stumbled into him on her way out of the bathroom. "So, you're a doctor."
"What gave me away?" he asks, his smile moving from polite to playful. "I'm Jack." He tucks the chart under his arm, holding out his other hand to her.
Kate smiles and takes it. "I'm Kate."
"It's nice to meet you, Kate."
"Yeah, you too, Jack." Her eyes flicker to the curtain they're standing next to. "How's he doing?"
"Oh, you're the one that brought him in." He says it like a statement, knowing she wouldn't be asking if she hadn't. "There's no permanent damage. He'll be as good as new in a few weeks."
"That's good."
There's an almost awkward pause and then another doctor catches his eye, waving him over for a consult or something like that. "I should go."
"Yeah, of course," she says, one hand reaching up to pull back the curtain.
"It was nice seeing you again." His fingers wrap around her forearm and give it a light squeeze, his smile still in place as he moves past her to join his colleague.
Kate smiles slightly, pulling back the curtain the moment he leaves her side and takes a seat in the chair next to the bed. The man in it is laying on the white sheets, a few blood spatters on the edge of the mattress. He cringes slightly when he shifts, the bare skin of his back pulling uncomfortable around the bandages protecting his stitches.
"So, what do I owe you? For bringing me in. Want a cape or badge declaring you a hero?" He's defensive, probably unhappy about somebody helping him when he didn't ask for it.
Her lips pulled up into a half smile. She knows that feeling. She doesn't like feeling like she's in debt to anyone either. "I owed you one, actually," she said. "For helping me get out of that elevator at the airport last week..."
He looks at her for a moment, like he might be trying to figure something out, but the look in his eyes is gone just as quickly as it came. "I suppose we're even then, Freckles."
"We are."
"So, have you been following me around, trying to figure out how you could repay me or somethin'?"
A soft chuckle bubbles in her throat. "Of course not. It was just lucky that I found you. A coincidence."
"I don't believe in coincidence, sweetheart." He's got this mischievous gleam in his eyes and she can't help the smile that tugs at the corners of her lips.
"I'm Kate."
He smirks. "I'm Sawyer."
