Let me tell you a story, kid.

[She stares straight at him, her frustrated, exhausted gaze unwavering.]

Back in my world, there are a lot more girls like me. Magical girls, you know? Defenders of justice.

[There's a bitter laugh.]

Those witches are everywhere in our world and someone's got to take them out because they kill a lot of humans. So, some lucky girls get to have one wish granted, and they become like me. They become magical, their wish is granted, the witches are killed, and everyone is happy.

What a load of crap.

[It's dryly cynical.]

Humans wouldn't last long against the witches. They'd get torn up in a second and die. So when we get turned into magical girls-

[She pulls out her soul gem. It's still a beautiful, clear red.]

Our souls get ripped out and we get turned into friggin' zombies. No matter what happens to our body, as long as this thing is okay, so are we. We can be healed again.

[She puts it away.]

But using magic corrupts it, and suddenly it ain't so pretty anymore. So we have to kill witches for grief seeds to clean it. It's a food chain, you know? Witches eat humans. Magical girls eat witches.

[There's something darkly sarcastic in her words, almost as if she's mocking herself.]

But the thing is, that corruption ain't just for show. It doesn't just stop us from using magic more. Once it gets enough of that crap inside it and goes completely dark-

It turns into a grief seed, and we become witches.

[She lies back, putting her hands behind her head, finally looking away from him.]

It's happened to every single magical girl that's contracted with that rat bastard, and it's going to keep happening no matter what. All we have to do is survive for as long as possible.

It's a great life to have in this shitty place, isn't it?

[He sits through the story, and when she's done he's more clinical than ever.]

So basically, using magic corrupts the gem and defeating witches clears it. How long does it take, usually? To go from clean to witch without anything to clear it?

Yeah. Glad you got that out of it.

[She pauses. She was going to answer "I don't know"- she herself had never let it get that far, of course.]

[But Sayaka had. Kyoko knew that's what happened to her more that ever now.]

...

Back home, two and a half weeks, if you're fighting witches and using magic every day. It doesn't happen as fast here.

Didn't think you were the type to want pity.

[It's an off-handed remark, and he quickly delves back into the topic at hand.]

So you absolutely can't use magic right now. That makes things more difficult.... It's not necessary that you use it outside of a fight?

I never want-

[She shuts up when he continues on, a dark look coming onto her face. That's it, then. She can't use magic. She's stuck acting like a human when remaining a monster.]

It makes things easier, but I don't need it. I'm strong enough by myself.

[It's a partial lie- it bothered her to know how much she relied on magic.]

Then it's possible to hold off until people figure out a substitute. As long as you can keep it up, you don't have to become that thing again.

I'm figuring out a way out of this. No one else.

[There's emphasis on the "I'm".]

Yeah, 'cause that's gonna fix everything. [Dry. Sarcastic.] Talking like that is stupid unless you actually have a plan.
