[It's late at night, late enough when most people are asleep. Alexei is one of those people...or well, was. His journal had been placed aside, but it can still pick up sounds. Roughly it picks up someone violently waking up. Alexei found himself wandering into memories he didn't like to recall. They were quick flashes, but his moments ( Read more... )

[Iroh ponders the question for some time, responding well after the original question. He's fairly talkative, having stayed up late himself reading]

Back home I strove for happiness. Happiness for myself, and for my nephew. I don't want much, just a simple life. As...for your second question. I would gladly give my life to see the end of the great war my grandfather started.

Why do you ask? Is something bothering you?

I think that is probably the one goal everyone strives for, happiness. It just takes different forms.

So it would end a war, but will the world maintain peace after it?

[... that you're dead and going to be dead again when you get home? Yea, that's something to be bothered about.]

I'm simply curious to hear other people's thoughts. What everyone left behind when they arrived here.

For my world, it truly would depend on who replaced my brother as Firelord. If it was my niece, then it would probably be worse because she's crazy, but if it was my nephew thats a different story.

Well, what's waiting for you back home then? What goals do you have?

You are of royal blood?

...I wish to see equality within the Empire. Our jobs and our future are dictated by our social status. I want to change that old way of thinking and allow people to choose how they want to live their life. There is much of the Empire's outdated way of thinking that needs to be changed and that is what I've been working towards, from within the Empire.

[Iroh audibly sighs]
I am the son of Firelord Azulon, the eldest, and crown prince. I abdicated to my brother in favor of finding my own way, and a simple life. I too feel that social status is foolishness, and that provided people respect each other, social standing is unimportant.

Are you of noble blood yourself?

I...see. [Someone actually gave up that way of living for a simpler one? That's...huh] Did you find what you were looking for?

And no, I am not. Neither noble or of royalty.

[It happens. Its a zen thing]
It happens, though having money and power from a name is nice, better to earn it with merit. May I ask if you are in some sort of armed rebellion?

[He can respect a guy like you who gives an answer like that.]

Not exactly. I worked for the Empire, and earned my way toward a position where I could do something.

An elected official? or a meritocratic advance?

Meritocratic. Of the two branches, I joined the knights. Normally one could simply apply to join the knights. Sadly, that only applied to those of nobility at the time. Commoners had no place within the ranks of the Imperial knights.

I was only able to join after demonstrating my capabilities in an official tournament that was held by the Empire long ago.

Ah, interesting. So you were forced to prove your worth before joining the knights? What are...knights exactly?

[Voice] fallenambitions August 15 2011, 02:16:03 UTC
Because I wasn't of noble birth. I couldn't join by normal standards.

You can think of knights as soldiers. We are the ones that go out and protect the Empire and its people from various threats.

Alright. Well that strikes me as strange, though. You had to earn the right to join the military? I've always thought of the military as a place where even the son of a pig-farmer could rise high through bravery.

So your laws are not as bias as ours?

There was a reason why it was set like that. You see, the Imperial Knights didn't have equal standing as the Council back then. The knights were under the command of the Council along with their duties to their King or Queen.

The Council unfortunately, cared nothing for anyone but themselves and keeping the nobles happy. [And he speaks bitterly when he mentions the Council] So naturally, commoners had no place. No noble would work with someone from the lower class.

It wasn't until I rose to the rank of Commandant and took away the Council's hold over the Imperial Knights when that law was finally changed.

So you succeeded in one of your goals, at least nominally yes? I mean no offense, but it sounds like the nobility of your world needs a swift kick in the pants. I mean, if someone wants to FIGHT, why not let them join the military?

I certainly left quite an influence for others.

There are...far too few in the upper class who believe that. The Council in particular never exactly saw commoners would fit the image of an Imperial Knight.

[A pause] It's Alexei by the way. We've had these conversations and have yet to even learn of each others names. [Which, he finds kind of amusing.]
