I've never understood why it is proper etiquette to pretending to be bad at something when you are in fact quite good at it. Humility isn't thinking you are worse than you are.
I also don't understand why you must pretend that everyone is just as good at anything as you. I get that you aren't supposed to point out that you are better, but why do you have to lie if it comes up?
I was never good at sports, so I never cared if I were picked last. It made sense. I did not like when people told me I was good when I wasn't, because it made every such compliment a meaningless polite statement.
Treating others how you wish to be treated does not always work as a rule for kindness for me.
