What kind of game is Fallen City?
Fallen City is a panfandom jamjar-style game, where once your character enters the world of the game, they will not be able to leave the world through any means. We plan on having an overarching plot that is character-driven, the effects of which will be decided by the action of the characters and the whimsy of the mods.
Is there an age requirement?
Yes. Due to possible mature content, we require that players must be 15 years old to play at Fallen City. There are no exceptions.
What sort of events are there?
There are two types of events. Plot-related events will drive forward the main storyline, and how the players participate will often decide on the future of the city and its citizens. Magical events occur when there has been too much magical buildup, and the system backfires on a massive scale, affecting all or nearly all of inhabitants of Archea. At certain events, a die roll will be optional if you desire a completely random effect or outcome for your character.
Do I have to put a rating on my thread?
No, but we do ask that you put warnings for any content that may cause others to be uncomfortable in the opening information for your thread. We also ask that you keep the list updated if more should be added. The following is a list of suggested warnings: alcohol use, drug use, swearing, sexual content, explicit sexual content, violence, graphic violence, and death.
If you aren't sure whether your thread should be marked with a warning or not, please do so anyway.
What isn't allowed?
Being a dick. Be courteous and understanding towards your fellow players.
Hate speech. You are not allowed to treat another player badly because of their race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, nationality, etc.
OOC Drama. If you have a problem that cannot be handled reasonably between yourself and another player, come to an admin or a moderator for help.
Godmoding. Be respectful of your partner's wishes. Don't try to force them to act against their will, and do not make your character all powerful.
Avoidance of IC Consequences. If your character isn't kind, be prepared for negative reactions from other characters. If your character gets into a fight, be prepared for them to be injured. If your character uses a lot of magic, be prepared for backlash. Your actions will generate reactions. Avoiding the unpleasant ones will not be allowed.
Mary Sues. Perfect or unrealistic characters are not allowed.
What happens if my character dies?
When your character dies, their soul hangs close to the Aesir, clinging to the last magical net put in place by the remaining necromancers. They can be channeled back into their body for a price. The necromancer may want one of your senses or one of your talents or one of your fondest memories in exchange for being brought back to life. The price is up to the player, but if the moderators feel as if it isn't big enough, we may ask for more.
Sadly, upon your third death, the soul becomes too weak to cling to anything and the body and soul will vanish, likely to return into the world which they came from.
Characters
The character I want to play is on the cast list. Can I still play them?
We will allow multiple copies of a character, provided that they are different enough from the version in play to be considered a separate entity. A character taken from a few chapters or episodes away will likely not be considered different enough to be played. If the character you want is dropped or idles out, you can apply for them at the next app cycle. Whether you choose to keep their current history is up to you.
Are OCs / AUs allowed?
Original Characters and Alternate Universe characters are allowed, but they will have to pass the same level of quality that we expect from canon characters. You need to be able to defend your character if we are doubtful. Make them convincing!
Can my character use magic?
If your character can use magic in their canon, then they will find their abilities remain, though their use of magic will be tied into the small, flimsy network that native magic users are bound to. Big spells will likely cause a backfiring incident where it plain won't work, some sort of random effect will be induced, or the spellcaster will suffer harm.
If your character cannot use magic in their canon, you may choose to opt in for them to be able to access the network once they have arrived in Archea. Their powers will be as limited as everyone else, but the upside is that, you, the player, get to choose their abilities. Be modest - an overpowered character is unlikely to be accepted without edits being requested.
What's magical fallout / backlash?
Magical fallout is the result of too much magic being in use when the system failed. When the network crashed, all the magic currently in use had nothing to contain it and keep it pure. The magic tainted everything it touched, whether it was crops, buildings, or people. Areas where magic was being heavily used in Aesir - primarily the shopping and expensive housing districts - are now a danger to anyone who enters them. Being in contact with anything tainted has unpleasant side effects. Eating tainted food will cause one to get sick. Spending too much time in the heavily tainted parts of the city will cause you to have a headache growing in severity among other unpleasant symptoms such as nausea and difficulty breathing.
Magical backlash occurs from magic being used now on an unstable system. The energy that is used has to have some sort of reaction. This means that spells have a high chance of failure, doing only partially what they are intended for, or there is even a chance that the caster will be injured in the use of it. Because not every spell has backlash, there will occasionally be a very large backlash as the system relieves itself of built up energy.
Can my character use dark magic?
If you can find a tutor who is willing to teach you, and you are willing to give up a part of your soul, then yes. Regular magic users cannot tap into the dark network.
How do I get a radio? What are they?
An Archean radio runs on solar-powered batteries and requires you to tune in to frequencies. Along with working sound, it projects the image of the speaker in a small black-and-white staticky hologram, which can be switched off (either receiving or sending) to preserve battery life. You can brave the highly irradiated market district to steal one from an abandoned shop, acquire one from a street vendor (who probably stole it themselves), or you can go to a leader in the refugee camp and offer your aid in exchange for a radio.
Does my character need to work?
If your character is willing to contribute to the efforts of the native citizens of Aesir, that is certainly encouraged. There are ways to not do work and still survive, but living gets easier if you have some sort of income.
Can I leave Aesir?
Yes, your characters may leave Aesir to explore the rest of Archea. An outpost exists in each cardinal direction, but they are not highly populated, and crossing the wasteland is dangerous. See the Setting page for more information.
Is there a character limit?
There is a base limit of 3, but you can gain 2 more character slots if you are active enough with all of your characters to prove that you can handle the additional ones.
Contact and Gameplay
Is there a group chat?
We are currently working on making a chat room, and we will post a notification once it is done.
I have a problem or a question and I need help.
Feel free to ask the admins and/or the mods if you have a question.
How long will hiatuses last?
Players are allowed to take a one-month hiatus. If you require any more time, please contact us about this and keep us updated. We'd like to know if you're okay.
Are there activity checks?
Yes. Activity checks will happen at the end of every month. Characters will pass if they participate in one thread in the main community and have participated in at least one other thread in either the radio network or the main community. If you fail the activity check, we will contact you and inform you. You can only fail the activity check twice consecutively before the character idles out.
There is no activity check for the month of May.
Who tags the posts?
When your character is accepted, we will create a tag for you, and we ask that you tag your own posts. Untagged threads have the potential of being overlooked in an activity check, so please tag your threads. If you join a thread, it is your responsibility to tag yourself in the thread, not the OP.
