Walking down the street, his posture still that of the Angel the vessel harbored walked one of the most important Angels in the world. Not because he was high ranked, or particularly beautiful. Simply because he pulled the man out of hell who in the end stopped the apocalypse. So depending on whose side you are on you either would say a hero in a trench coat, or a bastard in a dirty jacket. No matter. He walked with purpose.
Living as a human since the apocalypse ended, in New York City, he took the name Castiel Novak. Jimmy, long since gone to his reward in heaven, well he wanted his memory kept at least in some way. So he took the name. The trench coat? Well that just reminded him of Dean, Sam, Bobby, and everything they’d been through.
He opened the door to the Humane Society and was met by loud barking and the smell of dogs. He blinked, looking around. He was on a mission.
“Can a help you?” A young man, barely 18 it seemed; approached him. Castiel blinked, tucking his hands in his pockets, trying to appear less stiff. It never worked. It didn’t work today either.
“Yes, I am here to see a cat.” Nodding once to affirm what he said.
“Oh, great. Well we have lots of cats. Some girls and boys today, they’re back here, if you’ll just…”
“No. A cat.” Castiel said again, pulling a worn piece of newspaper paper from his pocket. “This cat.”
The young man took the paper from his hand and looked. He smiled.
“Ahhh Ceri! She’s a wonderful cat. Most people don’t look at her. She’s been here a while, but she’s wonderful.” The young man smiled, leading the way.
Castiel followed, still walking with purpose, clutching the paper.
“Perhaps I should have come sooner. It is…a large decision for someone such as myself. I was afraid she would have gone home with a suitable family.” Castiel rubbed his palm on his coat. He would never get used to hand sweating. He would never get used to a lot of things.
“No she’s still here.” The young man stopped at a kennel, and inside was a very sad looking cat. Her striped fur was a bit dull, her eyes had no shine. She looked at Castiel without daring to hope. “She’s 10, you know that, right? She is older. She’s very healthy. Just needs Senior food. We would send a bag home.”
Castiel smiled at the cat looking at him with her big yellow eyes.
“Hello. I’m Castiel. So you’re Ceri.” He approached the kennel and slipped a few fingers inside for her to sniff. “I understand you need a home. Would you like to come home with me?”
He felt silly asking, but he knew things humans didn’t. How animals of higher intelligence knew every word we said, how she knew when people didn’t want her. How in her heart she could in fact lose hope.
She looked up at him slightly, sighing.
“She’s really friendly. She’s a little shy. Want me to open this so you can pet her?” the volunteer asked, smiling. He liked Castiel. He liked all people who talked to animals really. It was not often a heart came in so open.
“Yes, please. I want to be certain she likes me. “ Castiel nodded.
The cage was opened and Ceri sat there, eyes still wary. Castiel approached and slowly stroked her head.
“There now. See I really am not so bad. People find me odd, but I don’t think that will be a problem for you Ceri. What do you think? I have purchased the various things you would need to live in my home. A bed, a box, toys, a tree so you may see out the window…”
The cat looked once more, then stood on her aged legs and slowly walked to the end of the kennel and rubbed her head against Castiel’s chest, purring.
“Well what do you think?” The young man asked, but he already knew, Castiel was smiling wide.
So that is how one Castiel Novak ended up with one Ceri, aged female tabby cat, who came to live in his tiny apartment. That is how two hearts that had been broken and were slowly mending became two whole hearts again.
That night, Castiel willingly gave up his side of the bed to a small cat simply because she purred, even though he had battled all the demons of hell in his long life.
