New York Update

First, the Job:

The first couple of days have been an exercise in reading lots and lots of documentation, but the people have been really good. My boss is a gigantic dork who has an unnatural fondness for Monty Python (and yes, I say that knowing every other dork). I'm sitting to an older Jew named Ira who, quite typically is very cranky, and yet somehow simultaneously jolly. The one downside is the person on the other side who is an older gentleman who feels the need to demonstrate how awesome he is at all the stuff I've been doing for 10 years. This wouldn't be an issue, except he knows just enough to be absolutely wrong. Happily, I think everyone else is fed up with it too.

Second, the apartment:

Oh, my apartment, how I love thee, let me count the ways. First, hardwood floors, how I've missed you. Second, more than two total kitchen drawers. Third, lots and lot of cabinet space. Fourth, working gas burners that don't heat only a square inch section of the pan. Lastly, I continue to love the courtyard my apartment looks onto, green, quiet and cool.

Third, New York:

There is alot to be said for just picking a direction (that you know to be reasonably safe), and just walk and drop into random stores and restaurants you find. I don't think I've found an awful restaurant yet! The other thing I've noticed is that parks are /really/ well kept here, and very densely populated almost all the time. I'm used to parks back in MD where grass is often patchy and fences and playgrounds have their paint peeling (not always, but frequently). I guess it helps that parks here are frequently glorified courtyards, but I'll take what I can get. :)

Fourth, my brother:

It has been really quite awesome being 4 blocks from my brother. It is really good to have someone just down the street to go and hang out with at the last minute.

Lastly, all of you:

I miss you all and I was really glad to see all of you last Friday. Special thanks to Jenna and Kim for hosting and organizing the Gone Away Party, it was an awesome time. I'm going to miss living so close to all of you but I plan on doing my best to stay in touch and visit. Also, I said it in one of the comments here and a number of times last Friday, but if I care enough to say goodbye, I care enough to say Hello, so everyone here is welcome to crash here if they want to visit NY.
