I have decided in my black little heart (which many of you may disagree with)to talk about heroes. A modern day hero, what a laugh. We look to authority figures, to those who survived 9-11. But I don't that is what makes a hero.
A hero to me is a person who inspires people. Whether it is Martin Luther King Jr. or Joan of Arc. Some heroes will never be remembered beyond their own lifetimes. And that is okay; because they don't always want to be remembered. Just changing something is enough for a true hero. Ultimately the truth is that when someone were to meet their hero they would be disappointed. After building up the image of a hero to something extraordinary, they find out that their hero is human. Just like them.
I thought about that last night for at least an hour. The funny thing is that this came up because of Harry Potter and Fanfiction. I love both. I started thinking. What if Harry actually sat down with someone after the war was over. He'd be a bitter man, seen too much death and destruction for that not to happen. What would the reaction of a child meeting him be?
One could rant and rave how it would not be fair, but that is untrue. We are all human and in each of us is the power to be the Hero for someone, even if it is because of a smile at a stranger. In my own life my hero is my Grandfather. Papa will never get a medal of honor, will never get a parade. But in his own quiet way he helped me. "Let's look it up!" or something along those lines. He was always learning and being the best person he could be. What more can you ask for in a hero?
Really?
