Okay, books. They're great and wonderful things and so much better than TV for staving off the boredom monster. After all, TV shows have to have a budget for special effects and all I need is my own imagination. Not that all TV is a swill. There are some good shows ... and there will be a bit at the end of this about shows I like.
Anyways. The last three books I read were The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas and The Bone Collector by Jeffery Deaver. I got them from the library. Because it's just a cool place.
This is the first time I'd read the ... closer to originals of Dumas' works ... and they were a lot different than all the random abridged and changed versions I'd read/seen. I don't think I'll read them again. Cool fact about the editions I got. CoMC was from the '40's or earlier and TM was '60's or earlier. Judging by the stamp cards in them, that is. They didn't have copyright dates that I could find ... but it's Dumas. I don't think he has those left.
I liked The Bone Collector too, although the ending was a bit campy, like most mystery/thriller novels. Oh noes! The killer is someone the hero knows! Why does this always happen in this genre? No one knows! It makes no sense whatsoever!
When I went to the library to return those yesterday, I picked up five more books, which are the following:
- Ender's Game, by Orson Scott Card (read)
- Murder Is My Business, an anthology of assassin stories (reading)
- Garden of Beasts, by Jeffery Deaver
- The Coffin Dancer, by Jeffery Deaver
- The Historian, by Elizabeth Kostova
Ender's Game is one of those books that I've been meaning to read for simply forever, but haven't gotten around to it. I'm glad that I did, as it was an excellent book that I simply devoured. I'm looking forward to reading more of Orson Scott Card's works ... but I was already a fanboy of his before reading his fiction. He has a great book on getting published in the sci-fi/fantasy world which I highly recommend.
Murder Is My Business is proving interesting. It's a bit hard to get used to short stories though, but I suppose, seeing as that's one of my weak points, I should read and study how they work. And, hey, it's assassins. (Okay, some of them are just killers.) How cool is that?
The two Deaver books I got for obvious reasons and the book by Kostova looked interesting and I'm pretty sure it's been on some big bestseller lists. Not that that's always a good indicator (see The Da Vinci Code), but I don't exactly have a list of recommendations a yard long to read.
So. Guys and gals. Give me a list of recommendations a yard long. Preferably books that would show up in libraries, so nothing too esoteric, unless it's old and classic esoteric that they'd probably have. Go!
Moving on to shows ... I saw an episode of the Riches (the latest one, I think) a couple nights ago. It looks to be exactly my kind of show and quite humorous. It's about a family of con artists. And we all know how much Falar loves con artists. I'll probably be trying to pick up episodes of that to watch, but who knows how that will actually go.
I mowed the lawn today. Um. My days off have come to an end for this week and I'll be working until next Monday (Tuesday if I can get one of the other workers to switch with me). Yay for work! It makes money!
