Day 12: Flist-created February Meme

Feb 12, 2014 19:16

If you don't know England is the middle of a very wet apocalypse. I've just about survived a very rocky bus ride home and being hit in the head by flying debris in the gales. Let's see it I can get today's meme entry done before my house loses power.

February 12th: Talk about your favorite movies. Or just your favorite and what it means to you. janie_tangerine

I can never pick one favorite film. I'll force it down to a top five with some honorable mentions... )

Oh, falafel, don't get hit in the head -- be careful out there!!

I am consistently amazed at how many 'favorites' we have in common. I love every film on your list -- and half of those are in my top ten. But THIS one, oh my:

David Thewlis gives one of the best acting performances I've ever see in any film.

OMG, I never found anyone who loves 'Naked' as much as I do. I wish more people had seen it and knew how incredible Thewlis could be because you're right, you wouldn't guess what a powerhouse he is from Harry Potter.

Oh, speaking of Mike Leigh films - Gary Oldman is a former Leigh actor too. In fact he did one of his first films with him. Not a well known one but they still worked together. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meantime_(film)

I think Naked was one of the less improvised Leigh pieces. I agree the dialogue is incredible.

Yes, I have since discovered that bit of news. The post is three years old, but I saw the movie the year after it was released. But you're right, it's a hard film to watch. I've only seen it three times in twenty years.

I do love Gilliam's Fisher King -- both Bridges and Williams are wonderful -- but my all-time fave Gilliam is Brazil. Consequently, I can't give up on the man, even though his brilliance has since dimmed somewhat. BUT, I am thinking I'll give The Zero Theorem a try.
And guess what? David Thewlis is in it!!

Thanks for linking that trailer! I'd heard about the film but I hadn't seen a preview yet. And I love Brazil too. I think my preference for Fisher King comes from a rare occasion of me yearning for a happy ending.

Yikes. Those are some sad films. Children of Men was so heavy and I cried during Wall-E even though I thought it was hopeful.

Brick was totally awesome and I had to rewatch it a couple of times for sheer enjoyment. :-)

ETA: Stay calm and eat cupcakes. :-)

Eat your cupcakes now! No more cupcakes once the hens are gone!

LOL, I know right? Wall-E is the lightest film on my list and I cry buckets through that one too. I rewatched Priscilla last night though and that's definitely more upbeat and feel-good.

I haven't rewatched Eternal Sunshine for years but I'll always love my darlin Clementine *hugs icon* Truman Show I have rewatched recently and Wow...that film is everything. You should watch Children of Men if you haven't btw.

i'm checking my flist! it's a thing that is happening!

YAY!! Next step is making an entry. I'd be sooo excited to see an lenina entry.

Ah! Hope you're staying dry & warm!

Also I love R&G Are Dead, both the movie and the play. (If the weather gets too bad where you are maybe you can find a boat to not be on?)

It's been dry today. Apparently a worse storm is brewing tomorrow. I'm supposed to be travelling to London on Saturday. Kinda nervous about it.

I have frequently not been on boats! :)

What interesting choices! I haven't thought of some of these movies in years and think I'll now rewatch some of them. Children of Men is one that has stuck with me throughout the years, what a great film.
