it's in your face, but you can't grab it

Oh yeah, wanted to note that I took my mother out on a date last night, to the USABDA (ballroom dancing association) dance. Paid for her and Justin (who showed up with no cash, unsurprisingly), but I knew the woman doing check-in, so we snuck by with student pricing. The mini lesson was meringue, the basic step which is, if you're not familiar, essentially "step sideways, then bring your feet together, rinse, repeat, wiggle your hips" and is almost impossible to "mess up" since even if you miss your partner's lead, you can just fix it the next beat, so it was excellent for someone who's never been ballroom dancing before. Despite her reluctance to dance with anyone she didn't know, she was probably the least successful following my leads, though she looked fine with Justin (he's still more patient than I am, no matter how laid back I am getting in my old age)- she's just one of those people who gets easily frustrated when they can't do something perfectly every time. I can relate, anyway. Towards the end I spent my time convincing people to rhumba and teach me how to hustle competently while she hid in an archway in a corner, gossiping with some early to mid teenage girls who, not realizing the relation, kept talking about that "really cute tall guy with the most gorgeous blue eyes." I found this really funny when my mom repeated everything on the drive home, and recalled for her last month when one of those same girls came up to me last month when I was in the middle of a group of UVMers chatting it up.

Girl: Excuse me..
Me: Yes?
Girl: You have BEAUTIFUL EYES.
Me: I know (turning back to the conversation)
Crowd: WHaaat?!?
Girl: (thinks) That's a fair answer. (walks away)
Women in group: (eying me) Soo, are you coming to Chili's afterwards?

Women are ridiculous.

My waltz, foxtrot, meringue, rhumba are servicable, I'm happy to note. East Coast swing is still awkwardly theoretical for me, West Coast is rusty (really haven't done much since high school); samba, salsa, cha-cha, tango, etc are just embarrassing generally, and I'd really love to learn the bolero. More people need to dance with me, especially if you can disco or bolero. If you're a stop on my road trip and dancing interests you AT ALL, find a local chapter and we'll definitely hit one.

mom, dancing
