So, when I was younger, I really liked Billy Joel. I'm talking like ages 3-12. I still think he a has a lot of good songs, and even though it's a cliche, a lot of his "early stuff" is really quite good. Something about taking the Billy Joel out of Long Island, but not taking the Long Island out of... yeah, whatever.

Billy Joel is a boring, second-rate Elton John.

Nah, I won't go that far. And despite the fact that both play piano, Elton John and Billy Joel are actually not that similar.

No, probably not. But I will admit to hearing a song by one of them on the radio and momentarily thinking it was by the other.

I have a music recommendation for you: Okkervil River. Rock band out of Austin. Very literary, a hint of twang, some real sad bastard stuff mixed in.

You know, I discovered Okkervil River about 10 days ago. Yep, they sound like your description. When I first heard them I thought it was Arcade Fire, but not quite. They're pretty good.
