Someone in another office caused an error in our database yesterday. Since I was handling our manager's duties for the day, I had to call him on vacation to find out how to handle the situation. He was on the ocean -- no cell phone reception -- and didn't call me back until 9pm, when he finally heard my voice-mail.
So I am going to work today, on a Saturday. I am not being paid for this time. But I have watched my best friend work diligently as a regional manager, and I realize this extra effort will be recognized and accounted to my work ethic. When our branch of the company expands, we will hire dozens of new employees. Someone will have to train and manage them. And when I say "someone," I mean it's gonna be me.
I may not have any management experience, but I am already showing my capability to learn quickly and take on greater tasks when requested. I am a shoe-in for the position, simply by being in the right place at the right time with the right attitude. I realize, though, that they could always hire someone more qualified to manage. That means I have to run with this and prove I can handle the position.
Thus, stopping by the office for a few minutes isn't so bad. Promotion, here I come!
