Twenty-Two Chapter 23
Keith awakened, but didn’t open his eyes. He was enjoying the light and lazy touches of Jon’s slightly calloused fingers across his face and chest.
“Might as well open your eyes,” Jon said with a little laugh. He kissed Keith’s closed eyelids. “Come on, we’ve got to figure out how to get home.”
Keith sat up and put his hand around the back of Jon’s neck. He pulled him in for a short kiss. After he pulled away, he said, “Yes. We’ve got to get home. Find out what happened to Dan and Rachel, and if they’re alright.”
“I guess that we should just start walking,” Jon suggested. He stuffed his and Keith’s clothes into his backpack.
“I think we’ll need some breakfast before we go.”
Jon nodded. “This area has a lot of rabbits. They’re not too hard to catch.”
“I’ll wear the backpack,” Keith offered. He caught it when Jon tossed it to him, and loosened the straps before putting it on. He glanced around the cave, then transformed.
The sun was already high in the sky by the time they had hunted down a couple of rabbits each and eaten.
They eventually reached a tourist area and figured out from the giant map which way would take them from the Canadian side to the American side. From there, they could only hope they wouldn’t get lost on their way to New York City.

Rachel still hadn’t slept by the time she had to call her producer and Dan’s radio show producer.
“Rachel,” Shepard poked his head into the bedroom. “I’ve got to go. You can eat whatever food I have. Call me if you need me, okay?”
“Okay.” Rachel didn’t look away from Dan’s face, half-buried in the pillow. She flinched, but quickly relaxed when Shepard placed a hand on her shoulder. “I’ll be fine,” she reassured.
“He’s strong. He’ll be himself again,” Shepard encouraged.
Rachel turned to look up at the vampire. “Thank you.”
Shepard nodded, then left.
After a few minutes, Rachel sighed and went to the kitchen. She poured herself a glass of orange juice and made herself a couple pieces of toast. She ate quickly, not wanting to leave Dan alone for long to wake up without her. He would probably have another panic attack.
Rachel stretched out on the bed next to Dan and propped her head up on her hand. Her eyes went over the torn flesh of Dan’s back. The right side of his face was still pressed into the pillow, so she couldn’t see the burn over his eye that left him half-blind. Still, she knew it was there, and it hurt her.
It hurt her to see one of her best friends in this pained state. And, it wasn’t just physical agony. Those bastards had traumatized him. He would not respond to his name. He was clearly scared and would probably panic if he smelled a vampire within a mile of him.
And then, there was the question of what had happened to Keith and Jon. They couldn’t be dead. Rachel refused to believe that. Still, even if Dan hadn’t been attacked and they could look for them, where the hell would they start?
Maybe… maybe Stephen would know. Rachel snorted. That was probably a long-shot. But, they had to do something. She decided, if Keith and Jon didn’t contact them by tomorrow, she would go to Stephen, and hope he had an answer.
Rachel moved closer to Dan and laid her head on his pillow. She kissed his cheek and placed her hand over his.
“I’m here for you, Dan. Don’t be afraid.” Rachel closed her eyes and listened to Dan’s soft breathing.
***********
Rachel woke up with a start in response to the slightly cold hand on her cheek.
“I’m sorry, I‘m sorry.” Dan quickly withdrew his hand as he jumped back a little. “I shouldn’t have- you probably haven’t slept- I’m sorry. I didn’t-“
“Dan,” Rachel said.
Dan kept rambling about how he was sorry for touching her.
“Hey,” Rachel tried again. “Hey, listen to me. Don’t apologize for touching me. It’s okay. I’m one your best friends, remember?”
“Had no right. I have no-“
“No,” Rachel interrupted. “No. Don’t you dare say that.”
“I-I must. I don’t want to be hurt. Can’t take any more pain.”
Rachel placed her hand on Dan’s bruised chest. “They’re not here. They won’t hurt you. I won’t let them.” She it her lip when Dan looked down at the sheets.
“Look at me. Do I have rights?” Rachel asked.
Dan raised his head, then nodded.
“Why? We are both the same. We’re both werewolves. According to them, we’re both animals. What makes me better than you?”
Dan shrugged.
“Please, just think about that, okay? You are not inferior to me or anyone else. You are a beautiful man, inside and out. I don’t want that to change.”
Dan bit his bottom lip. “I… okay.”
“Good,” Rachel gently replied. “Are you hungry?”
“A little.”
“I’ll see if Shepard has any soup.”
“He’s… he’s not here, is he?”
Rachel shook her head. “He went to work a couple of hours ago. I’ll be back in a few minutes.”
Rachel found a can of cream of chicken soup and heated it up in the microwave. She also got a cup of water. She went back into the bedroom with the food in hand. Dan was sitting up and glancing nervously around the room.
“There’s only us here,” Rachel reassured.
“I want to go home,” Dan said after taking a spoonful of the soup.
“Me too. But, we can’t do that until you’re able to change.”
“Still can’t do it.”
“I know. But you’ll be able to soon. You’ll be alright.”
Dan got through half the bowl of soup before his slightly shaking hands placed it on the bedside dresser. He laid back down on his front, once again hiding the burned side of his face in the pillow.
Rachel started to gently massage the back of Dan’s neck. It was so calming to him that he began to tell her what Beck and his gang had done to him. His voice broke often and there were long pauses, but he kept going.
With his eyes closed, Dan couldn’t see the silent tears running down Rachel’s face. She had to keep wiping them away before they could fall from her chin and splash down onto his arm. If this was going to help him get through the trauma, she did not want him to stop for her sake.
“… I think the last thing I said was that I love you guys,” Dan finished.
“Oh, Dan,” was all Rachel could find to say. Her friend reacted to her sniffling sound.
Dan opened his eyes and looked up. “Rachel? Are you…? I-I’m sorry for-“
“Don’t apologize for thinking you made me cry.” Rachel leaned over to say into his ear, “I’m here for you. Whatever will help you get through this, I’ll help you.” She kissed the shell of his ear.
They laid together, finding at least a little comfort in this fucked up situation. It took Dan a little time to decide to hold Rachel’s hand.
Dan would keep trying to transform throughout the day, each time met with failure.
It wasn’t until a little after seven o’clock, Rachel saw Dan’s teeth elongating, usually the first part of the transformation. The whole process took longer than it normally did, due to his weakness and all the pain he was in.
Rachel couldn’t help but smile at the brown-grey wolf sitting on the bed with her. Dan tentatively touched his nose to Rachel’s. Rachel tilted her head up to kiss Dan’s wet nose, then pulled him into a hug.
A little whine came from Dan’s mouth, asking a question. Rachel replied, “Yes, Dan, we can go home now.”
Rachel took a minute to write Shepard a short note, thanking him for his help. Dan rubbed the side of his face against Rachel’s thigh as she did write.
Once in Rachel’s truck, Dan curled up in the passenger seat. One of his back legs hung over the side. Rachel kept one hand on Dan’s head for the whole drive back home, occasionally scratching behind his ears.
Rachel drove around their neighborhood before going straight home to make sure that there weren’t any vampires around. “Looks like we’re safe,” she said to Dan.
Once inside their house, Rachel followed Dan into his bedroom. She opened one of his drawers and gave him a pair of pajama pants. He took it in his jaws and went to the bathroom.
Rachel changed into her own pajamas and sat down on a sofa, listening to the shower water. He was in there for over half-an-hour before she heard the water turn off. She gave him a few minutes, then knocked on his closed bedroom door.
When he didn’t answer, Rachel asked, “Dan? Dan, are you okay?” There was still no answer. She opened the door and saw Dan sitting on the foot of his bed, dressed in his pajama pants. His legs were hanging over the edge and he had his face in his hands.
Rachel went over to stand between Dan’s legs, and wrapped her arms around his shoulders. He didn’t respond to it.
She pressed her nose into his hair and, in the gentlest voice she could, said his name.
