Rush Limbaugh sat in the conference room again, this time talking to Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity.

“Judging by his Convention speech Stephen has recovered from the ‘not-being-a-conservative-anymore’ controversy,” Bill commented.

“I know, plus the Democrats are ahead of polls after the conventions,” Rush said in frustration. “I thought you could handle them.”

“I wasn’t expecting them to have so much support,” Bill said defensively.

“We need to step it up a notch at the debates,” Sean advised.

Bill nodded. “That’s the perfect time to defeat them once and for all.”

Rush grinned. It seems like not all hope was lost. They can still win this thing. “Alright then, let’s move to Stage Three of Operation Killing Colbert: Kicking His Ass During The Debates.”

Throughout the month Jon and Stephen prepared for the debates. Jon used Stephen as his debate partner, since Stephen’s a perfect Republican and Stephen used Bill, since he settled into the angry white man role easily.

Soon it was time for the first debate, the one that was known afterwards as the Rumble 2008. Watching Stewart and O’Reilly battle it out on national television made Stephen more and more worried about his debate in October. Despite Jon’s lead in the polls and his mostly bipartisan views no one really knew who won the debate. That scared Stephen, because if Jon fought hard and almost lost to O’Reilly, how could Stephen win over Hannity, who is more aggressive? To improve his chances, Stephen worked even harder to prep for the debates.

October 2nd arrived and Stephen was in Washington University, gearing up for the debate. Secretly he was freaking out a bit, and the hand suddenly was on his shoulder didn’t help. He turned around and saw Jimmy standing in front of him. “Where’s Jon and Bill?” Stephen asked.

“They’re preparing for the next debate. They said that they are sorry they couldn’t make it, though,” Jimmy added when he saw Stephen’s look of disappointment. “Nervous?”

Stephen nodded slightly and looked towards the stage. It was about time to start the debate. He must have looked really worried because Jimmy hugged him and said, “Don’t worry, you’ll do fine.” Then Jimmy left, since it was time for Stephen to go onto the stage. Stephen walked to his podium and took a deep breath to calm his nerves before the debate started.

As soon as it did, he brought his A-game and soon it was a war of words between him and Hannity. Stephen tried to answer the moderator’s questions and present bipartisan ideas but Sean kept fighting back with his conservative ideas, ones that Stephen has agreed with for years and still does agree with, trying to break Stephen resolve in bipartisanship. Stephen fought harder, and it looked like he was winning. When it was over, all he wanted to do was fall on the couch and take a nap. Deflecting Sean’s attacks were more tiring than he thought.

Jimmy caught up with him afterwards. “Stephen, you did an awesome job out there! That was amazing, you totally won the debate!” Stephen grinned tiredly at Jimmy’s words. They have had a great start, winning two of the four debates. Now all they have to do is to not mess up the next two.

Stephen watched the rest of Jon’s debates at their headquarters, the second presidential debate was an obvious win for Jon, and he didn’t know who won the third since he slept through it. It didn’t matter much though, since they topped the polls.

When he said that to Jon the morning after the debate Jon said, “Yes, we’re topping the polls but with a paper-thin lead! Despite the fact that they lost the debates, the Republicans still did a great job and are stealing our supporters.”

“We’ll get them back, will we?” asked Stephen uncertainly.

Jon ran a hand through his hair. “I’m not sure we can. We only have about three weeks left to campaign.”

Stephen knew this and saw that the odds were against them. Then again, he didn’t go through this whole campaign season just to lose.

“Alright,” he said with determination, “I guess we better start campaigning then.”
