I'm not sure whether this news item about Princess Beatrice's hat makes me want to laugh or groan. What a wild and crazy world. $30,000 for a funny-looking hat: I can't even fit my brain around that.

Actually, the hat looks to me like a Doctor Who design. I wonder if Philip Treacy is a fan.

Don't get me wrong, I like strangeness. But I think I prefer a more attractive strangeness. I like it that it is... for want of a better word... remarkable. But I think you'd have to pay me $30,000 to get me to wear it.

It's the unique qualities and the cachet of owning a piece of royal memorabilia that's jacked up the price, I'm sure, not the hat design, which is utterly hideous.
