Fringe 3x19: "Lysergic Acid Diethylamide"

Oh, how I love Fringe. It can be wacky and free-flowing and still not break the thread of its own serious suspense.

Tonight's episode "Lysergic Acid Diethylamide" had so many gems, most of them the kind that catch you by surprise. Some nice unspoken references to all sorts of movies and TV shows, too - all the usual suspects. A few favourite moments:

  • Broyles and the little birdie.
  • Broyles blowing bubbles.
  • Peter's fascination with Broyles' head. Broyles as an Observer - well, why not?
  • Astid taking care of everyone.
  • Walter calling Astrid "Astro" and her calling him "Wally" (or was it "Wall-E"?) in return.
  • Morse code.
  • The motorcycle.
  • Olivia hiding as herself as a child, to see if Peter would recognize the fake adult Olivia as a fake - and echo of Olivia's worst horror, that he failed to see that the alternate Olivia wasn't her. And this time, he passed the test.
  • The way they all turned into animations, and turned back.
  • Astrid and Broyles. Awww.
  • Evil Nina.
  • Matrix Peter.
  • The red door.
  • "Aye, aye, Captain." Heh.
  • Olivia's eyebrows when she was Bell. Or do I mean, Bell's eyebrows when he was Olivia? The mouth, too.
  • The ladder to the Zeppelin.
  • Walter's sorrow.
  • Walter comforting Peter as he woke up.
  • The last line. Why does Olivia think the mystery man will kill her?

A few questions and comments:

  • I expected Bell to turn up in the iPad.
  • I expect Bell to turn up again... when we least expect him. I wouldn't put it past him to be already in the computer, and hiding. If Olivia can hide, he can hide.
  • Why a red door?
  • Did the episode merely reflect Olivia's state of mind, or are there other clues in here? Does Nina really want to kill Peter and Walter?
  • Olivia seemed so relaxed as herself. Was it because of Peter?
  • Where was the Observer?
