I don't think it has ever happened to me that I've only liked one of an author's books. There are cases where I've only read one book by an author, but that's almost always been because either I didn't like the book well enough to read another, or they never wrote another book.
Except... I can think of one author, and there may be others, where I loved her first book so much I was a little afraid to try others in case they didn't match up. That author was Elizabeth Knox.
I never heard of Matt Ruff - now I feel curious about him!
I think the disappointing book one is worst, though. Especially if it's part of a series that you really loved, so you know that the author can do so much better by the characters and situation than is happening.
Sometimes it's a case of a series that starts out really well and then... and then, after a few books, it seems the author has nothing new to say. And the story is just treading water in one place.
I don't always - I would say that I don't usually, but I'm not sure how many series I actually read. Of those I love, I'm usually in there for the long haul. But How many is that? Robert B. Parker, Sue Grafton, Janet Evanovitch - well, I think she's losing her edge. George R.R. Martin has pretty much ground to a halt, but his last book wasn't up to par, either. I liked all the E.C. Tubb books - didn't I hear there was going to be another one? - and, once upon a time, Earle Stanley Garnder.... I'd have to think about patterns there.
Maybe this is why trilogies are popular. They don't linger, so to speak, past their "best before" date.

You're very welcome. If you don't already read filkertom, you may want to check him out. He always has something interesting to share, whether it's music, discussion of comics, etc.
