Buying a laptop!

Jun 12, 2007 06:50

So, I might be getting a second-hand laptop soon. 'Thursday' soon. If the guy still has it in stock on Thursday, which he hopefully will.

The one I'm looking at at the moment is from SY Computers, a little shop down the road from me where I've bought two good computers, second-hand of course -- the first in the general area of 2000-2001, which I upgraded there a couple of times as well, and the second a little over a year ago. Neither were ever 'top of the range', not by the time I got them, but they did everything I wanted them to do, and the first lasted a fair amount of time, I think.

The laptop's specifications are as follows:

DELL LATITUDE D600------------$540
• Pentium 4-M 1.4Ghz
• 512 DDR RAM
• 40GB HDD
• DVD /CDRW
• 14" Screen
• Network
• Modem
• Sound
• USB
• Wi-FI
• Power supply
• Carry bag
• Windows XP Pro installed with License

Just thinking about it has me thinking about writing again, which has been a fairly rare occurrence for me, at least since my AlphaSmart carked it last November. I've come to realise that I'm far more productive when I am not at my desk, and no longer have the wrists for writing-by-hand.

I was able to borrow a laptop for the latter half of NaNoWriMo last year, but it was just that -- borrowed. The one I'm looking at buying will be mine, as well as superior to Ye Olde Borrowed Laptop, though all I really 'need' is a word processor. In fact, the higher capabilities of this one may be more harm than good, but I'm willing to take that risk. I'm quite sure that will come back to bite me in the arse later on, when I've got fifty games installed on the thing, but if I can at least hold firm to 'no internet on the laptop' then there'll be my biggest distraction gone.

I can't believe I just said 'no internet'.

Also, I recently found my lost notes from NaNoWriMo, and am itching to get back into it soon, and at least write until I've run out of notes, even if I don't finish anything. I (only) wrote 20,000 words, and I still have lots of notes to get through. But, as mentioned, I feel that I'm less productive on the desktop PC. My most productive night all month (bar the freakishly above-my-average second day wordcount) was actually that one at the all-night bakery.

In short, I may be getting a laptop, and may also have another crack at my woefully unfinished and neglected 2006 NaNoWriMo story. I'll also be trying to get to more (ie, any) Not-November meet-ups in the months to come, though I'm not sure how many I'll be able to make.

geekery, reality, nanowrimo, awesome
