Prology - Start of the Cycles
◇◇◇
I was born and raised in Seoul, in the capital of South Korea. My family consisted of my father, mother, younger sister and an adopted big brother. We lived a normal life in a normal sized house, but we were happy.
Our life was steady and peaceful; I went to the school near our house, had friends and got some good grades from school. I had fun with my friends, we played games and ran around the block doing typical things for a primary school aged kids; for example we used to go the nearest tiny market to buy some candies and play cards and go to our ‘secret headquarters’ as secret as a tree house at my friend’s backyard.
My life still continued unchanged even when I went to middle school, but, of course my interests changed. I was a teenager. My friends didn’t change, but we grew out from our primary school years; we started to play sports, as like soccer, we put much more effort to our outward and we started to be more interested about girls. Pretty ordinary for a teen, right?
Those years passed fast, and soon I found myself from a high school. I was good at sports, when on the other hand I lost a bit of my interest for the school itself. I ran around till late at night, hanged around with friends and girls. I was actually pretty popular! But the life was normal, there wasn’t anything extraordinary. My life just kept going like anyone else’s.
But when I was sixteen, everything changed.
It was 29th of August in 2013 and it was still the summer vacation. I was in my room playing video games when my father yelled for me to come downstairs on this very minute. I didn’t know what was going on, so I went down a bit lazily.
When I reached our living room, it almost felt like the time had stopped; expect that our television was pealing loudly. My mother was sitting on the couch, gazing the television like she was frozen at her place, when my father was standing beside the coffee table hands crossed on his chest. I stood behind the couch and almost forget how to breathe when I saw the Breaking News.
“Breaking News from Japan at 9:13pm the local time. Sendai is under attack of an unconfirmed assaulter, but what is confirmed, is that this is not an attack of a human kind.”
My sister Sora was at our grandparent’s in Busan, so she was apparently safe, but I didn’t know where my brother was. But I couldn’t think further when the anchor’s voice was filling my head again.
“We have never seen anything like this, the situation is chaotic; traffic is halted and people are in danger. The creature is enormous. People are horrified. There’s unnumbered amount of injured people and the situation seems to get worse.”
On the television you could see a hint of the disaster; people running around like crazy, buildings were on fire, windows were crashed, cars couldn’t move because of the fleeing of people. It was 9 at evening there, so everything was dark, and you couldn’t see very well the details. Everything was going to look even more shocking in the daylight.
But about the creature, the beast, there was only a few seconds long shot. I’ve never seen a like, only in movies and children books. I couldn’t believe what I saw. It had to be at least 100 meters tall, it was mostly dark colored and resembled a bit of dinosaurs, though it wasn’t. It was something different, more dangerous. Deathly.
“Japanese military and PSIA* are already on their way; Police alone is powerless. Right now the information we gained tells that there is tanks, jets and missiles on their way too. This is much bigger than we can even imagine.”
I swallowed my saliva nervously and squeezed the couch’s back my knuckles all white. This wasn’t really happening, right? It’s just a stupid joke; it can’t be real. Right…?
“Is this the beginning of an apocalypse?” the anchor asked with stern voice, when the television continued to show us the unbelievable disaster.
In few days the monster had destroyed three cities almost completely; Sendai, Fukushima, Yamagata. Over ten thousand people were killed. It was like the reincarnation for the earthquake in 2011. The monsters got a name; kanghui. It is a sea monster, which name comes from the Chinese mythology.
Japan grieved the victims. Memory monuments were built. Everyone tried to continue with their lives, but the fear stayed.
I had almost forgotten; I was still so young so I just distracted myself after the happenings spending time with my friends. School continued, life continued. Everything was normal again.
Then, six months later the second attack hit Fukuoka even worse. South Korea was alarmed when Fukuoka wasn’t so far away from Busan. Then the third hit Busan. It was like South Korea had feared. Japan was already a total war zone. People died, cities were destroyed, there started to be shortage with the food and our country was soon having exactly the same nemesis.
And in few days Busan was destroyed completely, like the East coast of Japan was. South Korea was in state of emergency. The other countries of Asia came to help, including China. Even United States came too. They united as much pool resources they could.
Everyone was having these same nightmares; what was going to happen? What if our city was soon having the same fate? What about my family?
Everything could change in days.
In the meantime when they tried to contemplate a strategy, the coast from Busan to Pohang was destroyed. But that wasn't fast enough and this was just the beginning.
Nothing was ordinary anymore.
