So I'm back from Wacken and finally conscious enough to check my internet! And I had a blast. ^_^ Thank you so much to
ironlord for taking me (and
jellybearwhore for apparently not hating me, hi there! *wave*)
Full review later, when I have time to write up all the incoherent scribbled notes I made, and also pictures! For now, though:
Eleven greatest things that happened at Wacken!
- Sitting on the grass in the Activity Area in the sunshine, eating a half-metre stick of pig, drinking from a litre beerstein full of Coke, and thinking "It doesn't get much better than this!"
-
eviltwinemma buying me a Morbid "December Moon" shirt for my birthday. Oh my GODS. Thank you!
- Hammerfall doing "Glory to the Brave", to which I could not sing along because I was crying too much to find my voice, but I was singing on the inside for all I was worth.
- Nocturno Culto of Sarke. Words utterly fail me. Especially watching him and Tom G Warrior together onstage like some Black Metal warlord side by side with his high king, and just knowing I was there, witnessing that...
- Dancing to ASP at about two in the morning, trying to keep my footing on the broken ground, feeling like I was dancing in another world and this was never going to end.
- Seeing my beloved D-A-D! Everything about them was perfect, especially when they played "Grow or Pay" and I promptly broke down crying, only to be thrown joyfully back into the party by them very smartly following it up with the breakneck "Evil Twin". I love them so much. ♥
- Ingrimm, who played a gig of a lifetime in glorious defiance of the fact that they were competing with Motorhead on the main stage. I do not regret missing Motorhead for them in the slightest.
- Heaven and Hell! Admittedly I was soaked, frozen and completely out of it by the time they came on, but they were amazing. And they played "I" and "Falling Off the Edge of the World" and and and...
- Dragonforce's set. About which I am not going to say anything further until I've downloaded the official video and know whether the cameras caught me or not. *grin...*
- Closing band Subway to Sally, who I knew nothing about but turned out to be brilliant medieval-tinged metal with a wonderful wild-creature of a singer who can't possibly be all human. This was two in the morning on Saturday night and I really thought I didn't have anything left by then, but somehow, it hurt less to dance than it did to stand still...
- And finally, my first band of the festival, Swedish glammies Bai Bang; who among other things do a fucking brilliant version of the Sweet's "X-Ray Specs" and have the hottest bass player this side of Eddie the 'Ead. First Fatal Smile, now these guys... man, what do they put in the water in Sweden? And whatever it is, where can I get some?
And for the record, some final statistics:
Bands I caught enough of to have an opinion on: 51
Bands actually properly watched-and-enjoyed: 22
Time spent in beer garden: < 2 hours
Time bailed out on the last night: just after 3am, after the Wacken Closing Song
Total expenditure excluding travel costs: 365 euros and worth every cent!
So yeah, that was my weekend! I hope yours were all good too... ^_^
Laters,
Rath
PS And then I get back to find Triple H has been telling the Legacy boys he's got two words for them after they kicked his ass in a handicap match. OH yeah. *grin* It don't get better than this...
