When Finland swept Eurovision '06... When Iron Maiden won a Brit Award... When Rage Against The Machine had a Christmas number one... When Dani Filth was declared the most iconic thing ever to come out of Suffolk... ...and now we're at it again. Clicky fingers at the ready, dear metalheads and metal hearts, because this one is potentially our finest hour yet. Scandinavian airline
Norwegian have a nice trick of putting portraits of Scandinavian popular and cultural heroes on their planes' tailfins - cool, yes? So anyway, there's an online vote going on to determine the shortlist for the next tailfin hero right now, and you won't believe who's currently leading the board...
...well, the name on the
official voting page is Øystein Aarseth. Better known, of course, as the one and only Euronymous of Mayhem, Black Metal legend. ♥ I don't know who put his name into the nominations, but I do know that since the word started going round thanks to blogs like
That's Not Metal, the polling process appears to have turned into a total landslide (from 23rd spot to the top of the board in two days? Hell yeah!) Voting closes midnight on the 28th, and it's only the 26th today. So get the hell in there, guys!
And before anyone pours cold water on this - the point, of course, isn't really whether Euronymous's portrait actually ends up on a Norwegian passenger jet's tailfin (although if it did happen, obviously, it would be the greatest thing in the history of aviation/metal crossover since Ed Force One ^_^). Realistically I know it's probably unachievable, as the voting website explicitly states that they reserve the right to remove candidates at the shortlisting stage if they "don't meet the criteria", and you just know that they'll pull a Suffolk Tourist Board and do exactly that.
The point, though, is that if they have to do that, because the entire fucking world chipped in to tell them that Black Metal is the greatest thing Norway's done in decades, it'll be awesome anyway. The shuffling of feet and general oh-crap-this-wasn't-supposed-to-happen would be its own reward, and in itself a fitting tribute to one of metal's true anti-heroes. From the figurehead of Norway's dreaded church-burning Satanic terrorists, to nomination as a national icon - in a mere two decades? That's irony. And it's glorious.
So come on, true believers: one more time for the love of Black Metal, let's push our luck. *grins* All hail Euronymous! \m/
