The begining of my story is random, however it gets... more important? I don't know haha.
I was watching Tyra (latenight reruns!) while sort of studying for my psych final and noticed she was doing a special on the porn industry. Needless to say I was intrigued... hah. The women on there had fascinating views on their careers... and the way it seemed so normal and okay was just crazy (some of them were moms, some wives, some just living their lives). But thats not what this is about!
They gave a statistic that Americans spent around $10 billion on pornography last year.
I am overwhelmed by the fact that this is indeed the world we live in. I don't mean to sound judgemental or high and mighty... but it was just a weird feeling. I am so so so thankful to live where I do and be surrounded by the opportunities and advantages that I have but there are just so many flaws in the way our world runs... it's intense. And I don't even necessarily mean the "big" stuff (while that is VERY important as well). The fact that even in our own super-power of a country poverty is such a problem, yet ten billion dollars were spent in three hundred and sixty five days on pornography... if thats something people feel the need to involve themselves in, it's their own choice to make but I can't even imagine the things that could have been done with not only the money spent on it but the time invested as well. Even half of it... nearly half of the world could have been given a dollar! There are a lot of places where that could have fed a family.
This got me thinking further... sometimes I catch myself watching trashy entertainment TV, and I will be the first to admit I think it's hilarious but I have to stop myself and think... "Why am I watching this?". The ideas and values that are so frequently perpetuated through our society are just awful. The things we learn to idolize as young children are so often made up of dishonesty and greed. I think this is true not only for "hollywood" but also politics and even the way we interact with and perceive one another.
I don't think this is true for everyone... I do believe that everyone can make their own decisions about who they are and that in many ways people are in control of their destiny so to speak. However I think there are far too many people in our world that aren't taught how to make educated decisions. That don't learn how to make productive choices, to have moral fiber (however they chose to define that) and are not presented with positive examples in life.
There is just so much on my mind lately... I could write for days! haha. These are just two of the many things I thought of. And I know there are many many many examples of the silly ways people spend their money and time, but I never even considered pornography as really being one of them and I think it's pretty crazy.
It's really up in the air where I'm going with all of this, but I was just thinking and felt compelled to tell all of you. haha.
thoughts?
