Neal Caffrey felt eyes on his back. Long-honed instinct demanded he turn around and investigate -and face the danger head-on. A woman, pretty and hard, was staring at him with a curious look on her face. Why was she dangerous? Nothing seemed to be hidden or false in her.
Neal held out a hand and smiled at her. “Hi. I’m…”
She cut him off, “the dumbass that’s been giving the Marshals fits with your tracking tag.” She was brutally blunt, almost to the point of being cruel.
Neal didn’t let his smile falter. With the exception of Diane -and he was having little successes with her now- he could charm any female. “My name is Neal.”
“I hinted that I know that, dumbass.”
“Who are you?” Neal tried a different tack.
She smiled like a shark. “It doesn’t matter.”
“It matters to me.”
She looked bored and sighed. “You are so predictable.”
Neal hated being predictable, but the tall man hurrying to the woman’s side forestalled any verbal response. “You promised to behave,” he told her. He read Neal’s face as if it was a book. “This is not behaving.”
“I promised not to piss off an FBI agent,” she corrected.
The man looked Neal over with a frown on his face. “Not an FBI agent?” he questioned.
Neal held out his hand. “Neal Caffrey,” he tried with a grin.
This man was much more mannerly. He smiled and shook Neal’s hand. “It’s very nice to meet you, Mr. Caffrey.” He addressed his partner, for they had to be partners. “It’s time to go. The package is ready.”
“Great,” she said with fake enthusiasm. “Dumbass here is a terrible host.”
The man rolled his eyes, murmured “Sorry” to Neal, grabbed her arm and pulled the woman. “We are leaving. Now.”
