Now that he'd been at the job for a few weeks, William had settled in to a comfortable sort of routine that involved tea at the Perk after closing up the shop. He didn't know why the shopgirl gave him such an odd look the first time he'd ordered it, but no matter. He especially liked the idea of being able to order 'to go', for days when he didn't ( Read more... )

Rilla was still pretty bouncy from her very first cheerleading meeting and was having difficulty sitting still and concentrating on her Canadian history lesson.

Which was why she was out in the hallway with a mug of tea she'd made in her hand.

"Puppy!" she squealed in a tone so high it was entirely possible the puppy in question was the only one to hear her.

Yes, yes he was indeed a puppy! And he'd found Rilla! And he was really really pleased about this particular fact! Which he displayed by yipping happily as he bounded around her ankles.

She knelt down to see the puppy more closely. "Aren't you just the sweetest thing!" she cooed. "And you have the floppiest little ears! Who do you belong to?"

Well, William couldn't quite figure out how to convey that he didn't actually belong to anyone... so he settled for licking Rilla on the nose.

She squealed. "Oh, you are so cute! Don't tell my brother Jem," she confided, "but you are quite a bit more handsome than Dog Monday, who is a rather...plain dog."

"Well, I suppose if someone is looking for you, they can certainly come into my room to find you," she decided. "Would you like to follow me there? I'm not certain what sort of puppy-friendly treats I have, but I'm quite confident I can find something."

Yes, yes he would very much like to follow Rilla to her room! Hopefully he managed to convey as much with the barking and the tail wagging.

"I think I have some extra hair ribbons, too," she told the puppy happily. "Do you prefer blue or green?"

At that, William paused, tilted his head at her, and let out a confused sort of "Rrrrr?" Had she really just asked him about hair ribbons?

"You need a collar," Rilla said. "I'm surprised whoever you belong to hasn't taken care of that already."
