Today started off with a bang. I had a 7:30 meeting for one of our students. He has been at an alternative school for 45 days on suspension for behavioral issues. He was allowed to return on a behavior contract, but since then has been a passive-aggressive little shit. He isn't outright disrespectful. He no longer cusses and throws things at teachers. But instead he just actively refuses to do any work and changes the attitude of those around him who see him as "cool" and therefore try to copy his actions. SO. We had a meeting with all his teachers, the vice principal, the school psychologist and his parents. We each talked about how he is doing in our class and it was the same story over and over again. His mother then proceeds to BITCH US OUT. Like full on yelling at us. I've heard that this happens with her, so I was somewhat prepared, but not completely. After she started, the vp looks over at the counselor and goes "She is not going to do this. She is not going to name call." He looks at me, "Thank you Ms., you can go. The meeting is over." My friend Cheresa and I practically RUN out of the room. My God. No wonder the child acts this way. His parents SUPPORT it! You have every teacher your child has saying the same thing about his attitude and behavior and yet you still blame US. Fuck you, mom, fuck you.
Outside of that though, school has been running smoothly other than that. For the first time recently, I'm feeling truly blessed about having this job. Yes its hard. Yes the hours are long. Yes sometimes the kids make me want to bang my head against the wall. But overall, 95% of the time, I love these kids. I love the teachers I work with. They have all been so supportive and helpful and friendly. The administration is great-super supportive and obviously really care and love all of our students (which can be hard to do). I have never heard an administrator speak poorly of a student. Ever. That, is huge. So. I feel blessed that this is where I have ended up for my first teaching position.
In other news, I'm very excited about holiday shopping this weekend. Zellie and I are going to decorate the house, and our door for a holiday door contest in our complex ($100 off next months rent at stake!), and get some kickass presents for folks. Yay getting paid! Alright. Tonight I am making some homemade black bean burgers, drinking kiltlifter and watching What Not to Wear. To me, thats a good night.
