Once upon a time there were two houses sitting right next to each other. One was red and the other was blue. They had matching, pretty lawns and gardens.

In both of the houses lived a little boy. One of them was blond and blue-eyed, and very energetic and curious. The other had dark hair and eyes. He was quieter, and liked to read. They were best friends.

They loved to play in each other’s gardens, exploring the jungles of Africa or the plains of America. They were quite the adventurers, and spent every afternoon together.

They even played together on Christmas; after tearing open their presents and thanking their parents, they went outside in the snow to compare loot.

“I got a cat,” the blond boy said, holding out a tiny black kitten.

“I got a dog,” the dark-haired boy replied, holding a tiny gold puppy close to his chest.

The kitten mewled. The puppy yipped.

“They’re going to be best friends,” the blond boy declared excitedly, dancing with his pet.

“Really?”

“I can tell,” he affirmed proudly.

“What are you naming your cat?” the dark-haired boy sat down in the snow, trying to introduce his new dog to the cold white stuff.

“Kyouya,” he announced. The cat hissed and scowled when the blond boy tried to put in the snow to play with the puppy.

“I’m going to name my dog Tamaki.” The dog liked the snow, and tried to run through it to find out who this cat and boy were. He ended up falling face-first into the snow.

“Your dog isn’t very smart.”

“Your cat doesn’t know how to have fun.”

“Yup, they’re going to be best friends all right.”

The cat was scowling, trying to stay very, very still in the snow, as the puppy finally dug itself out, spraying snow everywhere.

-----

“I’m Tamaki!”

“I know. You got me wet.”

“Wanna play?” the puppy panted happily, running in circles on the linoleum floor, skidding on the slippery surface.

The cat rolled his eyes. “Play what? I don’t chase my tail.”

“I dunno. We could play with my ball,” Tamaki suggested, nudging it towards Kyouya with his nose.

“No, thank you.”

The puppy suddenly went very still and stared hard at the kitten. His eyes widened, and a high-pitched whimper formed in his throat. His ears drooped and he looked sadly at his almost-playmate.

Kyouya sighed. “Oh, very well. How do you play with your ball?” he asked, uncurling himself and stretching from his paws to the tip of his tail.

Tamaki, however, was more interested in the fact that Kyouya had agreed than explaining what he wanted to play. He lunged forward, eliciting a frightened squawk from Kyouya, pinning the kitten to the floor and proceeding to lick his face repeatedly.

“Yay! I’m so glad I have a friend!” Lick, lick. Extra-big, wet lick.

“Yes, thrill--pft--ed too. Get off me you big-“

“Aww, aren’t they just darling?”

“This? This thing? Darling?” Kyouya snapped.

“Mommy, this is Tamaki.” Kyouya was thankfully rescued by the introduction; Tamaki abruptly let him go and bounded the two steps to the child and his mother, wagging his tail, panting, and generally being a charming little pet. Kyouya sulked in a corner, trying to regain his dignity.

“Isn’t he adorable? Aren’t you adorable?” she crooned, rubbing Tamaki’s ears. Tamaki woofed in response.

“Adorable? That thing?” Kyouya hissed, licking a paw and trying to wipe his ear with it.

“Did your stupid dog scare my kitten?” The other boy joined his friend and his mother in the kitchen.

“No, we were having lots of fun!” Tamaki yipped, turning in circles in his excitement. “Weren’t we, Kyou-ya!” He slid over to stop in front of Kyouya, panting eagerly.

“Yeah. Loads of it.”

“No no no! See, they’re friends! Just like I told you!” the blond boy eagerly defended.

“Yes!” Tamaki agreed, licking Kyouya all over his face, just for good measure.

Kyouya barely restrained clawing the gold dog’s face.

-----

“I hope you know I resent having to leave my windowsill,” Kyouya mrowled indignantly as his owner readjusted his grip.

“But this is so much better!” Tamaki sang, prancing through a lawn as his owner scolded from the sidewalk. Kyouya’s owner, of course, chased after the dog, trying to achieve the same effect.

Kyouya was getting nauseous.

At last they stopped at their own lawns, and sat down.

“Ne, c’mere, Tamaki!” the blond boy called eagerly, cradling his kitten to his chest.

“He’ll come, eventually,” the dark-haired boy assured in a most superior way.

Tamaki finally stopped chasing his butterfly and trotted over, being sure to lick Kyouya before flopping down on the ground.

“You should come chase butterflies with me, Kyouya! It’s so much fun!”

“No, thank you. I’m quite happy pouncing on things.”

“Pouncing? What’s that?”

“It’s a refined version of what you do when you try to catch a butterfly. And I look better doing it.”

“Can you teach me?!”

“No, for goodness sake, you’ll just-“

“Hey, you two, look,” the dark-haired boy set a brightly wrapped mass in front of them.

They both cocked their heads and studied the mess of green metallic wrapping paper, white satin ribbon, and tape.

“It’s a present. Open it!” the blond boy urged, setting his cat on the ground and nudging it along.

“A present?” Kyouya asked, hunching down in the grass.

“YAY A PRESENT!” Tamaki woofed happily, barreling toward it. “Come on, Kyouya, let’s open it!”

Kyouya stared incredulously as Tamaki ran into the package headfirst.

Sighing, he sauntered over. Tamaki was tugging at the ribbons with his mouth, but he seemed more interested in playing with the ribbon once it was off, “chasing it” around the yard and barking. His owner just sighed and rolled his eyes. Kyouya, meanwhile, tentatively stuck a claw into the paper, and found that it gave way quite easily.

“Hey, come back here,” he mewled. Tamaki paused mid-jump and looked at him curiously. “We have to open it, idiot.”

“You mean there’s more?!” Tamaki yipped excitedly, nearly bowling Kyouya over in his hurry.

“Yes, fool. Grab this with your teeth and pull,” he instructed, pointing to the edge he’d made with his paw.

“Okay!” He did as told and stood.

Kyouya’s eyes narrowed. “Pull more. Until we can see what’s inside. And then you can play with the shiny paper.”

Tamaki trotted along in circles, pulling off green wrapping paper as he went, as Kyouya sat patiently and watched. What was inside the paper made even Tamaki stop and look, paws still planted firmly on his green paper.

Kyouya set a paw on it timidly. “It’s soft, smells okay…”

“It’s so big, Kyouya!” Tamaki jumped over a side, scrabbling madly at it, nearly tipping it over in the process, earning an alarmed hiss from Kyouya.

“You idiot! There’s an entrance where the side is lower!”

“Argh, Tamaki…” his owner muttered, picking up the puppy and setting him in the deluxe-sized bed.

“Oh! Kyouya, come in, it’s so nice!” Tamaki rubbed his face against the padded wall.

Kyouya carefully stepped in, hating the way he sank with every step, until he was next to Tamaki, head darting around to study this new… thing. Tamaki was lounging happily, pawing at the soft floor.

“Ne, Kyouya, isn’t it great?” Tamaki yawned. “It’s so… nice. It makes you… tired…”

“Stupid, it’s because you were chasing the ribbon,” Kyouya sneered, settling himself down against the puppy’s side. Well. It was softer than the windowsill, at least. And Tamaki was warm. And he had missed his nap today…

“Good night, Tamaki.”

“’Night, Kyouya,” their owners whispered, deciding to leave them and clean up the mess.

But neither pet heard them. They were both fast asleep, Tamaki’s tail twitching and hitting Kyouya in the face every few minutes.
