I hear you on how Dean's one-liners had an edge of cruelty about them, but for me that made it funnier. I found Dean scary when he confronted the father and when he was warning Neil. Like you, I loved that bit. It's a change from last year when they'd be dragging him out kicking and screaming. Now, man's an adult. Let him stand or fall by his own choices.
It's been fascinating to see how diverse everyone's reactions to this ep was. I've seen reviews comparing it to Route 666 and I've seen incredibly positive reviews like yours. Personally because I felt that the plot was weak and the guest cast lousy the ep will never be a favourite in the same way as say Faith or Phantom Traveler or Dead in the Water
