Maggie and Milly and Molly and Mae
went down to the beach to play one day
And Maggie discovered a shell that sang so sweetly she couldn't remember her troubles,
while Milly was chased by a horrible thing that ran sideways, blowing bubbles.
Molly befriended a stranded star
whose rays five languid fingers are
But Mae came home with a smooth round stone,
as small as a world but as large as alone
For whatever we lose, like a you or a me,
it's always ourselves we find in the sea
Dear Diary,
Today I quoted e e cummings loudly from the end of a pier, and the seagulls gave me a standing ovation. My little sister and I built a sand castle, then gave it to the mermaids when the tide came in. And I have a wretchedly painful sunburn, but it was so incredibly, wonderfully worth it.
