I've read about alchemy! Where I come from, it's theorized to be the beginning of magic. That's really neat! So you can turn lead into gold and all that? Do you have to follow rules of equivalent exchange? That always came up a lot when I read about it.

There always has to be equivalent exchange. The only way to break that is if you have the Philosopher's Stone.
Lead into gold is actually outlawed by the military. So is human transmutation.
And alchemy is science, not magic.
