Variable definition fail

OK, I admit that I'm always a touch reassured when I realize that big (gigantic, in fact) corporations can make the exact same stupid mistakes I've always made, and that they can get through their QA too. Do you see the issue in this one?

This is why I always get wonderful schadenfreude from finding errors in other publications. "See, someone with an actual proofing staff and only one publication a month can screw up, so I'm not doing TOO badly!"

Yep - I was downright gleeful when a professionally published book had visible XML tagging yesterday. :)

(It's one of our bugaboos, since of course it doesn't turn visible until it's rendered at the output proofreading stage.)

Oooh, thankful I don't have to deal with that!

Then again, I just discovered that my art department cut an entire conclusion from an article on me...and there's no place to weasel it back in. Sigh.
