Plus of the evening: Belinda had understood and wasn't going to press charges. Having been halfway through a movie, David had had to explain to his girlfriend after shutting his Compendium, then leave fairly quickly.
Arriving at Neil's apartment quickly thereafter, David wasn't sure what he was going to find or in what state Neil was in. Kilroy had said something about a 'bad trip', David having remembered plenty of bad trips taken by his former peers during his college days, the things weren't pretty as was evident by Neil's writing.
Carefully, David pushed the door open, noticing a slight burning smell. Taking a few steps inside the room, David heard or rather felt the small crack of glass under the toe of his boot, causing him to take a step back and glance down. The small vial was, for the most part, still intact, the needle barely touched. Stepping over to the kitchen, the burning smell growing, David noticed the small pile of ashes in the sink and frowned, turning back towards the living area where he gingerly picked both vial and needle up with a light inspection before finally addressing the seemingly empty apartment.
Kilroy motioned at David and then took a step toward Neil. "Caterpillar. There's nothing to be afraid of, we're just going to take you somewhere safe, alright?" He crouched down a little and held his hand out to his friend, searching his eyes and finding a universe of unleashed insanity the rest of Carrol's tales were burdened with. When The Hatter went on a bad trip he would dismantle the world and anything that got in his way, but the Caterpillar curled himself up so tight that it would be a wonder if he ever managed to escape.
"I know you don't recognize me, but I'm The Hatter. I'm here to take care of you." Kilroy said like he was speaking to a child. "Behind me is David. David is going here to help, too. There's nothing to be afraid of." He repeated keeping his hand outstretched.
With wide, unblinking eyes, Neil stared at this figure coming closer. The sound of its voice was soothing, but the words coming from its mouth... some of them wafted up to the ceiling where they hovered for a while before dissipating into a stream of colors, while the heavier words sunk to the floor, melting into the carpet and grew into a field of tall grass that waved gently in the wind.
Neil's heart was still pounding in his chest and sweat was beading on his forehead, but he began to feel more relaxed. He wanted to trust it, but his nerves were still on edge. The figure's outstretched hand was welcoming, and so tentatively, Neil reached out to take it.
The moment he came into contact with the figure, the universe warped and spun around, morphing into a frightening place. Neil screamed as he watched the flesh of his own hand burn and melt off the bone. He pulled away, grabbing the nearby potted plant and flinging it in the figure's way. Turning to run, he found the grass had become sharp blades that could cut him to shreds.
Feeling quite useless for the time being, David watched the interaction between Kilroy and Neil, standing far enough out of Neil's line of vision so as not to cause alarm, but close enough in case he was needed.
Things seemed to be going nicely until Neil suddenly gave a piercing shriek, flung his hands away from Kilroy and pushed a large potted plant over. David watched, horrified, as Neil then scrambled to his feet and turned in one semi-swift movement, took two steps away from them and crashed to the floor.
Staring transfixed at the whole scene, David managed to gather himself and made to step around the toppled plant towards Neil.
Kilroy took a few steps back as the pot was shoved in his direction and nearly fell on some of the shattered fragments. It was then that he realized that Neil needed to be either knocked out or restrained, but Kilroy himself couldn't do much, especially if Neil thought he was dangerous.
Using all of his body weight, Kilroy pushed Neil down by holding his shoulders and nearly shouted, "Calm down! Calm down, Neil, you'll be in much more trouble if you keep thrashing!" He tried to keep his grip on Neil but was pushed away.
