Being the reincarnation of Ali Baba had only ever been a burden based on what Athan blamed his Tale for doing to his life, such as his brother's greed and all that came from that. At least, until now. Recently though, he had begun to feel less resentment about his belief that his Tale ran his life, as being one had brought him people he liked (Murdock, for instance), and people he cared a lot about, such as Soo Min. He might have lost his entire family, but he had gained Soo Min Ahn as a guardian/sister/mother/something and that? Well, that was awesome on a frequent basis, not just because he had a great place to live and whatever he wanted, including a veritable electronics and game store in his room, but because she actually cared about him. It had been some time since anyone had cared for real, not just pretended.
However, Athan had come to think of Soo Min as unflappable rather quickly after knowing her, generally because she was, so the idea she was worried about something, not in an 'are you eating enough veggies?' sort of way, but in a 'potentially very serious' kind of way, worried him too. Okay, if he were honest, it freaked him out. Fairy tale bad guys weren't bad guys because they jaywalked, after all, they were bad guys because they killed people. And not just killed people, but cooked them and ate them or, in the case of the bad guy of his own Tale (which he still wasn't sure but he thought one of the cross outs of Soo Min's had said something about 'thieves') cut them up and hung the pieces up for display (and those were nightmares better suited to the night after watching a scary movie, nightmares that went away relatively quickly, not things that stayed with him because long ago, a part of him had actually witnessed that stuff). If Athan had learned anything since becoming a Tale, it was that the bad guys still sometimes liked to be bad, and since Ali Baba had been targeted for death by a band of pissed off thieves and only escaped said death because of Morgiana, this was a big problem to Athan.
Yeah, okay, Morgiana had dumped boiling hot oil on people. But, that was because they were bad guys and she was protecting Ali Baba. It was totally different. Morgiana was a part of Soo Min and as far as he was concerned, Soo Min could pretty much do no wrong. Ever.
Which, really, was the crux of the issue that he was facing right now. Soo Min didn't want him talking to anyone he didn't know and staying in the Pentamerone all the time, which meant both things were very good ideas. However, he didn't know most everyone all that well, so there was no one to talk to about this and, despite being generally shy, he wanted to talk to someone, even if he couldn't mention specifics. He couldn't tell Soo Min all of this, because he sort of felt she was trying to make him worry less, which was great of her, but he be a big jerk to keep whining about it to her after she had said not to worry. And Murdock... well, Murdock was very cool, but he also knew a lot of people and shared things pretty openly and Athan was a bit worried whatever he said might not stay just with Murdock. Plus, he'd look pretty dumb being scared of faceless Tale villains and he already looked dumb about his inexperience with girls. He was definitely not smooth like Murdock.
He should probably just go back to his room, it wasn't like he could stay downstairs forever when people came and went all the time in the Pentamerone. Somehow, though, it was more comfortable to be out in the open but anonymous than be up in his room, where people looking for Ali Baba would know which room was Athan Babcock's.
God, he was being such a baby about all of this. Ali Baby indeed.
