Arriving at a murder scene was never pleasant; no matter how many times Mary did it. In some ways, she was proud that it still bothered her. It meant she was still in touch with her humanity. She made her way through the crowd, showing her badge when she had to, until she came to the room with the body. “Damm.” She muttered under her breath when she the decapitated and mutilated remains. The victim was obviously dead. She leaned in and stared at the wounds, having to bend slightly to get a good look without touching the body or the bed
( ... )
Morgan quickly filled her in on what he'd gleaned from initial statements - who had done what when. He motioned with his eyes towards Devin and Miles and said, so quietly she could only just hear him, "We have a couple of Tales present - Devin being the one who was with the slain girl. And when a homicide occurs with Tales present it's a fair bet there's some manner of supernatural business involved."
He grimaced. He hated that word, hated the complications that Tale life brought. "I suggest that as soon as we leave, someone contact the Librarians."
Mary scrawled down several notes as she listened to Morgan, appreciative of getting the facts. Placing the pad and pen back in her pocket, her eyes trailed over to Devin as well. She lifted her hand to her forehead and rubbed it, trying to prevent the headache that all of this could bring. “Wonderful.” She muttered sarcastically.
She took a slow deep breath and looked back to Morgan. This was going to be a real mess, even more than it already was. “I have a feeling they’ll be contacting us.” She murmured.
"These worlds should not overlap," Morgan muttered. "It ALWAYS means more paperwork." He shared a wry, tired grin with her. "So do we treat this like any other investigation for the time being, or what? I don't want to treat them any differently because they're Tales, but I also don't want something else strange to happen ... " And with Tales, the potential for strangeness was omnipresent.
“We do everything by the book.” Mary instructed. They couldn’t give Devin special treatment because she was a tale. And, as tempting as it was, they couldn’t automatically assume she was guilty because of her tale history either.
"No," Morgan said, looking back over his shoulder, "I was waiting for her to gather her wits a bit more before asking for a statement. Though from the looks of her that may be a long time coming.
"Miles seems to be pretty together. I'll see if I can get a statement from him. And an UNOFFICIAL addendum, if you follow." Meaning, the Tale version of things.
Mary ran a hand through her hair and sighed. “If she is guilty, it’s better to talk to her before she can gather her wits.” Before she wanted a lawyer, Mary added to herself.
She sighed again and looked over at Devin. It was hard not to think of her as a killer, not with knowing her tale past and with what she had just seen. But on the other hand, Devin was so young. The mother in Mary actually felt sorry for her.
“That’s a good idea.” She added as looked back to Morgan. “I’ll talk to Devin while you talk to Miles.”
Morgan nodded; there was a reason, he was reminded, that he was not a homicide detective. He was rather glad of it. He resolved once more to keep studying for that *$% constable exam so he could get on to the mounted unit.
He watched Mary approach Devin, unsure who to feel sympathy for. He went to sort Miles out of the tangle of people in the hall.
