Harrison had spent the ride back to the house grinning and chattering on about almost getting stuck in the tubes, almost beating Les at Skeeball once and the prizes he'd won (a stuffed Helen Henny, several styrofoam gliders, and a pair of hot pink sunglasses that looked completely ridiculous on him, especially coupled with the silly grin on his face). It was quite clear that he had enjoyed himself.

As they approached the house, he wondered why it was so dark. "Gabe didn't say he was going anywhere," he told Chloe with a shrug. "But he doesn't always. ...Oh well." He carefully unlocked the door and stepped inside the dark house, feeling around on the wall for the light switch for a second before flipping the lights on.

Renée was the first of the guests to arrive at the party, courtesy of her ride being coordinator of the party himself. As soon as she arrived the two got to work on finishing up the decorations. She was put in charge of the streamers, hanging them all over, occasionally throwing the rolls to cover the furniture that was too high for her to reach. In fact, there was a roll of green streamers stuck on the top of the fridge. She had tried to climb up on the counter to grab it, but she was forced to give up the quest when Gabe gave the call for everyone to get ready to hide.

hey had only just scrambled to their hiding places a couple minutes before, but she was already getting frigidity. It took every ounce of her will not to jump up and scream 'Surprise!' as soon as she heard the door open. No, she had to wait for him to turn on the light. Renée stifled an irritated whine; Harri was taking forever! Once the light came on she jolted from her hiding place behind the couch, arms flung up into the air. "SURPRISE!"

For a split second, everything seemed normal. Then Harrison's friends popped out of nowhere shouting "SURPRISE!", causing him to let out a loud, shocked scream. He jumped back into the wall and placed a hand to his chest, pulling off his pink sunglasses with his other hand and looking at everyone with large eyes. Then, he smiled. "Geez louise," he said. "You scared the living daylights out of me!" It took him a few seconds to calm down (he was used to scaring people, not the other way around) before he stepped further into the room, a big grin now on his face.

They remembered! his heart sang. He looked around, making eye contact with everyone, his eyes growing more tearful by the minute. He might have been expecting presents from a few friends. He definitely hadn't been expecting this. As he continued to admire the place, he noticed the streamers and balloons and looked at Gabe. "You..." he said through a half-sob. "You tricked me."

Wiping the tears from his eyes, he smiled at Renee and crouched onto one knee, opening his arms for her. "C'mere, you. You knew all about this too?"
