It's been AGES!!

Dec 29, 2007 13:30

But yesterday was soooo awesome that I have to share it with the world.

I took the train to Grand Central Terminal. I took the Shuttle, then the 1 train. I got off at 59th, then walked five blocks to Lincoln Center. At 6:30, I went through the stage entrance of the New York State Theater, where I met my uncle, who is a Ballet Master for New York City Ballet. Around 7:30, he took me to the Makeup and Wig room, where I met the Wigmaster and the Makeup Assistant for the Nutcracker. The Makeup Assistant was around my age, and we talked a lot about how she got there and what she did before (she went to the Make-Up Designory in SoHo, and she worked in commercials, etc). I got to watch Drosselmyer's, Grandfather's, Grandmother's, the Tea's, and Mother Ginger's makeup and wig application. There were SO MANY wigs, mustaches, eye shadows, lipsticks, sponges, Aquacolor...... OH GOD. I want their budget.

The second act was going to be boring in the Wig room so Uncle Jean-Pierre took me to watch the show from the WINGS. Fantastic. I noticed all these little things you would never notice from the house. For example, the Hot Chocolate's costumes have little portraits of the founders of the company on an oval on the bodice, like a cameo (including George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein).  The Tea's wig isn't actually a wig, but a wig cap and the braid in the back is part of the hat. Oh, and Wendy Whelan (The Sugarplum Fairy) is BONY. Holy crap.

It was a wonderful evening. I love having connections.

omg
