The Universe lets me know what I should be reading-at least that's the way it seems. Library sales, thrift store, books jump out at me as I run my fingers quickly over the spines. No, they don't literally JUMP OUT, my fingers just stop upon the ones that turn out to be of interest, whether to me or the various people I share books with.
There is an author named Andrew M Greeley. I've read his books about Bishop Blackie in Chicago who solves mysteries. Today I picked up his book, "Irish Lace" it appears to be at least the second of "Nuala Anne McGrail novels", an earlier title being "Irish Gold"
The woman, Marie Phinoulah Annagh McGriel" is a bit pyschic or fey and perhap 19 years of age.
Speaks with an accent. avoids th sounds.
Another series I've enjoyed is about an Aspie looking for a mate. The rosie Project and The Rosie Effect are the first two and there's a new Rosie book coming out-I'll probably find it at a library sale in the Fall. The books are VERY funny.
I also enjoy some of Christopher Buckley's novels-laugh out loud funny- SOME of them-the best are Supreme Courtship (a female TV judge joins the supreme court). No Way To Treat a First Lady (dead president's wife defending herself against assaination charges "I didn't hit him THAT hard". And BOOMSDAY- a modest proposal to address the social security problem.
His bio book- Losing Mum and Pup was very sweet.
I enjoy the books of Dorothy Gilman- her character, Mrs Pollifax, becomes a CIA agent rather late in life.
Most of the libraries I visit don't have a big annual sale anymore. But several set up a few shelves of books you can buy in the lobby, or along the wheelchair ramp, or in the meeting room. At one, I picked a few dozen books in the lobby and went to the desk to pay. I guess the librarian decided she had a live one, because she invited me into the back room to look over thousands of books they hadn't had space to put out yet. I bought a bunch. I pass them along after I read them, to try to avoid clutter. I usually have several I'm reading at once-in every room and car, so I can always pass time reading when delayed with whatever I need to do next.
other good authors- Janet Evanovich (her 12 early paperbacks and the Stephenie Plum 'numbers' books. Some of her other books are on the weird and less interesting side-too divorced from reality. The real ones are very funny.
The Monk books have had a couple of different authors. Lee Goldberg is one, but are interesting. The Universe first showed me a MONK book at Dollar Tree. I bought it and liked it well enough. Then it took me to a video store where season one of Monk tv show was 9.99. OK, I tried it- funny show, OCD guy solves mysteries/crimes. Eventually wound by reading 17 books and watching 8 seasons of the show. Some episodes are very funny- like the san francisco garbage strike episode (with guest, alice cooper).
