waiting, a missing moment.
'She's a right git,' James said proudly. 'Bit of a she-male. I mean, who wears combat boots anyway.'
'James, haven't I already told you to stop talking about it?'
'We were in a meeting,' James shrugged. 'Dumbledore needed you. I understand.'
'No, Prongs,' Remus said without glancing up from the Daily Prophet,' I think you managed - in an admirable way, true - to actually not understand it so much that you have me wondering whether I started speaking Cantonese, somewhere along the way. I'm not interested.'
'You're hilarious, Moony. Cantonese.' James laughed. 'You appreciate the humour in all this. At least you can laugh about the fact that he ran off with a -'
'Lily, help!' Remus yelped.
'Sorry,' Lily said in her most impartial voice. 'You have treaded upon grounds I fear to enter. This is foreign territory to me. There's no stopping him now.'
'Thanks, love,' James said obliviously.
'Yes, thanks, love,' Remus echoed while folding up the newspaper. 'Seriously, James, I really do not want to hear about all of this.'
'Are you kidding me?' James asked, puzzled. 'I don't get it, Moony, she's so stupid and annoying and she's ugly, isn't she Lily? She -'
'Yes, why wouldn't I want to hear about the utter stupidity and sheer ugliness of the woman he left me for?' Remus spat. 'I wouldn't know!'
'Watch it, dear,' Lily said, tonelessly. 'He's getting sarcastic, now.'
'If I didn't know better,' Remus said as he narrowed his eyes at Lily, 'I'd say you were helping me.'
'I work in mysterious ways,' Lily muttered, but winked at him just the same. 'Don't tell anyone.'
'Are you siding against me?' James asked incredulously.
'Well, no offense, darling,' Lily said sweetly, 'but you're being an ass. Remus doesn't want to hear, end of story.'
'Ah, Lily Evans.' Remus sighed gratefully. 'I knew there was a reason I set you up with James. And all of that just to make my life a little bit better. I thank you.'
'Watch it, you pompous bastard.' Lily laughed. 'Or I'm giving James carte blanche.'
'That's my cue.' Remus got up and took his coat. 'I'd better head back to my wife.'
'You know, in all honesty,' James said as he frowned, 'I'd never believed anyone could make that sentence seem wrong, but there you have it.'
'And I might actually see that as a compliment.' Remus smiled. 'Right, I'll see you in the morning.'
He gave Lily a kiss and James a nod, and with that he Apparated to Emmeline.
