Frodo, defender of doves!

Aug 29, 2006 07:58

I was sound asleep this morning around 7:30. I wouldn't have been, but Frodo was growling & barking at a coon on the windowsill feeder at 3:30 am, so I didn't sleep well for a while.
Anyway, I was asleep & I heard Frodo barking & growling. I thought he must be at the front door, barking at someone walking their dog, or some such. I called, and told him to stop, and to come, and none of that worked. I finally gave up, after four or five minutes, and went to see what it was. He wasn't at the front door, he was in the parlor. Pippin was in the doorway between the hall & the parlor. Frodo was in the middle of the room, at the end of the futon. At the other end of the futon, on the floor, under the window was a dark lump. As I went to investigate I realized that it was a mourning dove who had lost her tail, and probably more than a few other feathers, as they (not the tail) were scattered around the room. I picked her up, took her out side, and put her on the covered feeder with some bird seed. That was half an hour ago, and I just now saw her fly off.

Now, Pippin was able to bring the bird into the house because I'd let him out around 4:30 this morning, and left the window open so that he & Ollie could come back in. It's turning to fall, so I won't be doing that much longer- they'll just have to wait till I get back up, or not go out. I have been thinking of getting a cat door that operates by a key on the cats collar (they come in both magnetic & infra-red styles). If I had a cat door, I could close it after they've both come in for the night, and open it in the morning. I doubt, however, that it would keep Pippin from bringing in his live toys (red squirrels, chipmunks, etc). On the other hand, with an open, keyed pet door, the cats could come & go while I'm away, but the coons & skunks couldn't.

Anyway, I'm open to thoughts or suggestions.
