My theory about the hash marks was correct! Though one tiny thing: after they had the recorders embedded in their hands, why did Amy put hash marks all over herself in the orphanage? This was before she had her recorder removed, wasn't it? Otherwise it would have been in that abandoned childrens' ward, not in the little girl's room.
Oh! And that crazy eyepatch lady at the hatch in the door! What was that all about? Did Amy move on to a different door with no hatch? Or was this some freaky alien tech? Man, I love a long series arc, but stuff like this that is so random and that you know is going to come up later is just frustrating to me.
I've decided to do something different, to hopefully better organize my thoughts. I'm going to break this down by character now.
The Doctor - The Grizzly Adams look does not work on this man, lol. Honestly, as brilliant as he is, I didn't feel like he was put to much use in this episode? I mean, I know he was always running things, a tweak to Apollo 11 here, and thing with the sonic screwdriver there, but... I can't explain it. The focus really seemed to be on the others, and maybe that's just me. I liked it though.
River - Oh, River. Always doing it with style, gurl. She's not going to let Canton fake shoot her and end up dragged around in a body bag! She'll swan dive out a skyscraper and let the Doctor catch her with the TARDIS pool. Which, how does that work? Is the pool right off the console room? Cuz if it were me, I'd worry about smacking off a few things before I hit the pool.
But that ending, my God. Interesting to note that the Doctor did his flailing hands and "what do I do with my arms?" thing again, but he didn't pull away! Very interesting. River's disappointment was so sad. It seems her adventures with the Doctor are winding down, and she knows it, while his are just getting started. She was hoping they'd be on the same page there, but they weren't. Sadface.
But HA! It is a romantic (or at least sexual) relationship between the Doctor and River! They've kissed lots! *does a happy dance* Whatever it is, it's a powerful relationship. Remember, according to the envelopes, she's #2!
Amy - This is gonna get ranty, but here goes anyway. It's not directed at people on my flist, but the fandom in general.
It's pretty sad that I can't watch an episode now without thinking how the Amy haters are going to react. I just want to enjoy my show, dammit. Anyway, I knew it was so wildly inconsistent for Amy to say she loves the Doctor that there was no doubt in my mind that she was saying these things to Rory. Because he would need that reassurance, which was why she said, to paraphrase, b/c I don't want to look right now, "I love you. Not him." And yeah, "fell out of the sky" is a pretty common metaphor, so I didn't sweat it there either.
She loves Rory and his stupid face, guys. Amy Pond has always had the mentality of a 12 year old. She punched Rory in the shoulder in Vampires of Venice instead of apologizing. This is how she operates, and I wouldn't have her any other way, because she's different to the other companions we've seen.
She calls out for the Doctor, because she knows he'll rescue her. He's her best friend. She tells Rory she loves him because she knows he worries about it with the Doctor around and she wants to reassure him.
And if any one gives Amy shit now, after calling the Doctor her best friend, I will take a cheese grater to their face. Because everyone loved how Donna and the Doctor were best friends. I loved that. You cannot give one companion shit and put the other on a pedestal over the exact same thing. Contrary to popular belief, you can be married to someone and have someone else as your best friend, even when they're the same sex as the person you're married to.
There, I'm glad I got that out of my system. I'll get to more Amy stuff below in my ~theories~ section.
Rory - Heeey, learning about Rory the Roman! I do hope that wasn't a one off, and throughout the season we see more of Rory remembering his plastic self on the slow path.
HOW AMAZING DID ARTHUR LOOK IN 1960'S HORN-RIMMED GLASSES? They really suited him!
I will forever love his devotion to Amy and anyone who doesn't can direct themselves to the left and not tell me about it or why they don't. Because I don't care. His insistance that Amy could always hear him nearly broke my heart, and I wanted so badly for that to be true. I'm big on fantasy and sci fi, so a psychic connection between them wouldn't be out of place to me at all.
The way he kept that recorder in his hand nearly the whole time to hear her was so sweet. It's like, he wanted to keep her close, even though it had to be torturing him to hear her so afraid and knowing he couldn't rescue her. ;_; My tears, Rory. You have all of them.
I dunno how I feel about him spying on Amy and the Doctor even after he realized Amy was talking about him when she said "I love you." I guess it could be explained as him not just going to get over his insecurities like flipping a switch, but I hope throughout the season he grows in confidence and all that good stuff.
And more Roman Rory stories, please!
Canton - It's so much easier to pick up things in retrospect, isn't it? Because that's when you notice that, yeah, it was Canton who shot both Amy and Rory. That pretty much is a big red flag for "in on the plan."
I'd like to know just how the U.S. government/FBI/CIA/whoever got access to those blocks to build the Doctor's prison. Will that come up again later?
Anyway, loved Canton. He was a great addition to Team TARDIS. He was willing to believe and trust the Doctor and that says a lot. It was great that he had an integral part of the plan in tricking the alien into an arrogant speech and using Amy's video phone ("Whatever that is,") to record it. The idea that every person on Earth who ever watches footage of the moon landing has a subliminal message to kill the Silence on sight is an ingenius way to deal with them, and I have to admit, very un-Doctor like. He's always the one to try and negotiate, to try and offer to take hostile aliens to a new planet, etc., but this time, no mercy.
But this can't be the end of the Silence. Some will survive, right? They'll just start hiding away. And there's still so many questions, like that control room/ship thing that looked like the one in The Lodger, the little girl, and the future Doctor's death. I have a feeling by the time the mid-season break comes, there'll be more questions than answers.
Theories time! The little girl was said by River to be human, but obviously we saw she has a Time Lord's regeneration powers. Was the spacesuit wired to convert her into a Time Lord using hobbled together bits of alien tech?
And of course, Amy is shown as the one holding the little girl as a baby. So why, if the girl was cared for in that room and saw those pictures everyday, did she just go "Help me," instead of showing any recognition for the woman in the photograph standing right there asking who she was?
The TARDIS's sensors were flipping between positive and negative, which is really freaking weird. I don't think it locked down on one or the other when the camera switched to the Doctor so it's still up in the air, unless in the next episode, he's like, "Amy, don't go sword fighting pirates, you're pregnant!"
IDK, did the Silence impregnate her? Because that's really gross and wrong. Maybe she doesn't give birth to this girl, but is given her to raise and the Silence takes her away?
Obviously this girl is connected to the Time Lords, and I know the way this fandom works, i.e. "OMG, AMY FUCKED THE DOCTOR! WHAT A SLUT!"
NO. SHUT IT DOWN. Like I said, my theory is the spacesuit was designed to convert a human child into a Time Lord. Though I have absofruitley no idea why the Silence would want to create Time Lords unless it's to suck out their power through a bendy straw.
Now, the question is, is this little girl still thought to be River Song? Does River have Time Lord powers?
NEXT WEEK, PIRATES, ARRRRRRRRRRR!
