yeah burke made us write red sox odes in english today and i got a little carried away...

An Ode to the Red Sox

Three generations have been born

Three generations, who have long mourned

Eighty-six years of cursed defeat

Boston and the Series did rarely meet.

But then, there were times when The Impossible came close

Our hopes would inflate to collapse, with scorn.

Forty-six, sixty-seven, seventy-five

Those three years, the ‘Sox stayed alive

To the very end; victory was so near!

Eighty-six came ‘round, surely that was the year.

Game Six - final inning - the balls’ famous dive…

Proved to the world, it was more than bad luck.

Not long after that, Shaughnessy’s book struck

The shelves of the bookstores.  The theory was out.

Everyone knew what the Curse was about!

Ruth’s former team would forever be stuck…

In the morass of losses.  Damn those Yankees!

For it was their fault, really, quite frankly.

Since they’d taken Ruth under their wing,

The Curse lived strong in every out of every inning.

Boston fans evolved crude, cross, and cranky!

’03 was a good one, they went oh so far!

‘Sox Nation watched, in every house and every bar

As the Yankees proved again, with a single home run

That once again, the Red Sox were done.

No one could stop it, not even dear Nomar.

But he was soon gone, to the ‘Nation’s great dispair.

Without our hero, how could we fare?

Yet, a strange thing happened the second he left;

Die-hard fans knew they’d reached their crest.

Maybe this luck stemmed from their crazy-long hair?

With Nixon, Damon, Ortiz and Cabrera

The Series win loomed “nearah and nearah.”

Good-natured Millar became the class clown,

His positive attitude turning things around.

“The Idiots,” so-called, grew dearer and dearer…

In the hearts of the fans.  Then there was Schilling!

Who easily pitched every strike of his innings.

Bloody and pained, he pitched perfect games;

Soon the whole country knew of Curt’s name.

It was he who started the Yankee killing.

And the Sox came back, out of the blue!

After losing too much, who at all knew

That our team could turn around, and with so much heart

Defeat the Yankees, after losing from the start.

It was clear, Coach Francona knew what to do.

So the Sox were in the Series!  The time was now!

But fans didn’t know exactly how

Their team could do it after eighty-six years,

A blast of the past was everyone’s fears.

Was a win what Babe Ruth would allow?

First game, second game, they swept the Cardinals.

With this group, not a moment proved dull.

For Varitek, Manny, Pedro and Lowe

Proved that the Curse soon was to go.

And it did!  Could we believe it?  After an 86-year lull…

Foulke tossed to Mientkiewicz, and just like that

Babe Ruth was quieted, at the drop of a hat.

Those three generations, with tears in their eyes,

Kissed the Curse of the Bambino the sweetest goodbye.

A new Sox team would be forever at bat.

So even though we’re the losers no more,

We will never forget those years of before.

For now, we know, a new era has begun.

Our troubled past is forever done.

So as I have told in this endless curse,

For now and evermore…
                                                      The Curse is Reversed!
