personality:
Without a doubt, Tony Stark is the biggest alcoholic, narcissistic bastard there is. It would be easy to blame this all on his upbringing and the fact that Howard Stark wasn't any better... But the fact is that Tony could have easily learned from his father's mistakes. And he didn't. He let the money and his genius go to his head and he developed a planet-sized ego. Tony would be first to tell anyone that commented on his ego that he's justified in it. Which isn't entirely untrue. He is ridiculous smart and good-looking. But, for most of his life, he had trouble seeing past his own nose.
It wasn't until his kidnapping that he even started to make an attempt to care about the world around him. Even then, his view of the world was still a little narrow. Tony doesn't take long to go on a revenge bender. At one point, revenge is pretty much the only thing on his mind. He tries to play it off like he's trying to help the world and fix his mistakes, but that really isn't it. The only thing is, he's extremely bad at finding out who is actually behind his kidnapping. It would never have occurred to him that someone so close to him would betray him in such a way. This does of course show that Tony can be a trusting person... He just never really learned to tell when someone was actually betraying him. Luckily for him, his revenge didn't take too long to deal with. This left him plenty of time to work on his other character defects.
With his revenge out of the way, Tony was able to actually grow as a human being, and try to save as many people as he could. Hell, he even got past the whole needing to get revenge on everyone that hurt him thing. Though, it's possible that was more just the fact that he didn't give a shit anymore. He knew he was slowly dying of palladium poisoning and just completely gave into every self-destructive desire he had. This wasn't much different from normal, except that now he just didn't care if anything killed him. He was dying anyway, and he couldn't figure out how to stop it. That didn't mean he hadn't stopped looking for something else to power the arc reactor... He just wasn't looking as hard anymore.
His depression was bad enough, that he just didn't even do anything when Rhodey took one of the spare Iron Man suits. He was hurt, sure. But deep down he knew the suit couldn't be in better hands. As much as he tried to put on a brave front and say he would be Iron Man forever, he knew that he needed a successor for more than just Stark Industries. This is just proof that Tony Stark has extreme emotional responses to events in his life. If he's angry, then he's pissed the fuck off. If he's depressed, then he just plain doesn't give a shit about anything. And if he's happy, then he has sex with all the models in the room- wait no that's not the kind of happy I meant.
The only thing that really saved him was when Fury showed up and gave him a subtle kick in the ass. Which is exactly what Tony needs on occasion. He can get into some serious funks, and not even his close friends can get him out of it. Especially not since Obadiah's betrayal. He still trusts Rhodey and Pepper, just... Not as much as he should. When he does make an attempt to open up to either of them, he gets brushed aside because of his fuck ups pissing them off, and he just gets completely discouraged and doesn't try again.
And despite all of his ego, Tony has no problem admitting to all his faults. He just doesn't work on correcting them unless he's forced to.
abilities/powers:
A naturally-occurring super-genius is definitely a way to describe Tony. He's able to do complex tasks, while drunk out of his mind. He also has a liver of steel, but maybe that'd be a superhuman ability.
I'm not really sure if the arc reactor would be considered a power or not... But since the point I'm pulling him from it's capable of preventing radiation poisoning, maybe it is? If I'm wrong, then just disregard this I suppose.
The arc reactor is what powers the Iron Man suit... And keeps Tony Stark alive. It's keeping shrapnel from piercing his heart, and since he uses it to power the suit, keeps him from getting his ass handed to him. Equipped with the new element Ununoctium, it also keeps him from dying of radiation poisoning.
