something about torchwood and children (three guesses who's smarter)
Things which were a bit good:
1) Backstory for people other than Gwen! I liked Ianto's sister and Jack's daughter. Yay for Our Heroes not springing fully formed out of the ground! (Bonus points for avoiding the pitfalls of the Tatooine backstory of FAIL)
2) Character continuity! Martha! Owen! Tosh! Martha's invisible husband!
3) The thing with the kids was dead creepy, yo. Well done, Torchwood.
4) Torchwood was semi-competent at their job! They figured out the kid thing, the speaking English thing, and the focused on Britain thing. They found the nursing home guy. They also almost recruited a double-agent, but hey, you can't have everything. And presumably they would have done a background check before actually hiring him? (Look, I can pretend, okay?!)
5) UNIT! I liked the UNIT fellow, he seemed decent, and had a fairly realistic view of Torchwood. Two thumbs up!
6) I also liked the new-at-her-job!secretary and Jack's frustration that she was the one person in Great Britain that didn't know what Torchwood was.
7) RHYS. Lurking shadily about the house! Figuring out the time zone thing!
7a) Gwen's like about crossing the Severn.
8) GWEN. I LIKED GWEN IN THIS EPISODE. TRULY THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END. SHE WAS A BIT AWESOME. I DON'T KNOW WHO I AM ANYMORE.
Things which were OH TORCHWOOD:
1) They lost the car. AGAIN. At least they didn't leave the keys in it this time.
2) JACK WAS CARRYING A BOMB IN HIS BOWELS AND DIDN'T KNOW IT.
2a) WHEN IT WENT OFF, HE WAS STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO THE SUPPORT STRUCTURE FOR THE LIFT.
2b) AND NEXT TO THE COMPUTERS.
2c) IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HUB.
2d) RUN FOR THE CELLS TO CONTAIN THE BLAST, IDIOT.
3) HOW MANY SECRET ORGANIZATIONS ARE RUNNING AROUND BRITAIN ANYWAY?
4) Speaking of secrecy, they don't seem to have even a nodding acquaintance with it anymore. At least they can joke about it now. WORST SECRET ORGANIZATION EVER.
. . . I think I am excited for tomorrow's episode. My world, it is askew.
In other news, my roommate and I were both away for the long weekend, and ever since I got back this afternoon, her cat has been climbing all over me any time I stay still for more than about five seconds. It is cute but also super annoying. And I am covered in cat hair. Woe.
