CHARACTER

✧ NAME: John Winchester
✧ SERIES: Supernatural
✧ HISTORY: Over here.
✧ TIMELINE: 2x01, right after making the deal with Azazel.
✧ PERSONALITY:

Before he was a hunter, John was just a normal family man head over heels in love with his wife, Mary. Everything changed after he watched her die, pinned to the ceiling of their six month old’s nursery and consumed in fire. Her death was absolutely devastating to him. He's never been able to move on since then, and to this day still wears his wedding ring.

John served in Vietnam as a Marine, and that kind of hardass alpha male mentality has stayed with him all these years. He rarely seeks assistance from anyone and probably won’t take it if offered. In the unlikely event that he does have help from someone (for a hunt or hustling pool or what have you), he’s the one in charge at all times, no questions asked. He answers to absolutely no one but himself, and he won’t hesitate to bust heads if someone challenges him.

Part of what makes John such an exceptional hunter is his determination (bordering on obsession) to finish the job. It started out as an obsession to find the thing that killed his wife, but he quickly learned to channel that into hunting and killing anything supernatural he came across. Once he gets on a hunt, or even a whiff of one, all of his attention is focused onto it. Everything else, people, money, and occasionally his children, takes a back seat until he sees it to the end. It’s gotten so bad in the past that he’s disappeared without word for weeks on end.

This obsession, coupled with his alpha male mindset, usually makes John a very difficult person to be around. It’s lost him several friends over the years, and gained him quite a few enemies.

As a father, John fails miserably. He took a distant, militaristic approach to raising Dean and Sam, treating them like soldiers under his command. He expected (still expects, actually) them to blindly obey every order he gave them, trained them like soldiers and even taught them how to handle weapons while still in elementary school. Early on, John would leave the boys with other people for extended periods of time while he would go on hunts. After he thought they old enough (the keyword here being ‘thought’), he began leaving the two alone, essentially forcing Dean to become a parent to Sam. He believed, at the time, it was the only way to keep them safe in the dangerous, uncertain world he was forcing them into.

He rarely shows Dean and Sam anything that could normally be considered parental affection. It's even rarer that he openly praises them. He felt it was never really conducive to the militaristic lifestyle they lived. It's only in times of great distress that he's willing to do anything outwardly paternal.

That isn’t to say that John doesn’t care for his kids. He does, probably more than anyone knows. He’s willing to do anything, even straight up murder, to keep Sam and Dean safe. Unfortunately, this makes them his greatest weakness. He’ll still take risks even when he knows his sons can handle whatever they’re dealing with. His concern for their safety clouds his judgment, and it’s caused him to play right into the bad guys’ hands on more than one occasion.

SAMPLES

✧ FIRST PERSON: Over here.

✧ THIRD PERSON:
John knew what he had to do even before they were shipped to the hospital. Dean had been in bad enough shape before the truck smashed them to hell, but with the way it had hit the Impala… well, there was no way anyone could have survived that. Even concussed and in a pain addled daze, he’d been able to make out the frustrated screaming of his younger son. But Dean was completely, deathly quiet. To John, even screams of pain would have been better than the god awful silence coming from his oldest boy.

He hadn’t actually gone in intending to give himself up to that yellow eyed bastard along with the Colt, but it didn’t matter. From John’s point to view, it was the only real option Dean had. When you stepped back and looked at it for what it was, it was the logical option too. An old gun and the soul of a beat up old drunk in exchange for the life of a kid who had barely been able to live his. That was a damn good deal if he had ever seen one.

John had no regrets as he limped slowly down the hospital corridor to meet his death. And why would he? Selling his soul was the easiest decision he’d ever made in his life. His son was worth an eternity of torture.

No, John decided, he’s worth a hell of a lot more.
