People of the barge, it is with grief I today announce saddening news to you all. As many of you well know, our friend Sergeant Howie left the barge many weeks ago having done the proud task of graduating his inmate. In such cases, many wardens return to their homes. I think that is what many say.
[Victor pauses.] Sergeant Howie was always a man of utmost principle. He did not choose to return to his place of origin. He must have chosen to pass from this world. Not merely from that of the barge, but his own. To pass from all worlds. I think that he must have done so with a light heart. For the Sergeant surely must have known that all things must come to pass, including our own selves.
I wish to hold a memorial on the barge, although many here do not believe in such things. I believe that we ought to honour the Sergeant's passing, he having spent so much time among us. He was a fine man and a fine warden, one of the very best. We shall not forget.
