I have spent the better part of the last few days reflecting on our time spent in the much changed world of the flood. I too was affected. I seemed to be a weaker man in many ways, but perhaps a kinder one. I do not believe him so far from myself. I do not believe that any of our counterparts were so far from us. If we are to believe that man has ( Read more... )

Perhaps, Victor, 'monsters' and 'saints' are made out of circumstance, and nobody is ever really one or another. Perhaps it's just a mantle you put on yourself.

I do not think that you are correct. Did you not see the reality of such things during the flood?

I saw that there were still... good things behind how I acted, how Jane acted. We were different, worse people, there was no doubt about that. But we still had the occasional good intention, we still... meant well, in our own ways.

Perhaps you are correct. I am once against presenting my approach in only sheer opposites.

Which is an understandable way to look at things, but I think it's a lot more complicated than that.

What did you like of your counterpart during the flood?

I... didn't like much about him.

But he meant well. Everything he did, he did because he thought it was good and right. He had very good intentions. He just didn't realise how his actions undermined them.

I suppose this good intent is to be admired, although the wrongful path is not. It is a sweet trap to be lured into.

I think a lot of people that do something wrong... really mean well in the start. Everyone at home that enforces the Rules is convinced Munsell is infallible and that they're for the good of the Collective. Even when people die.

Also, Victor, can I ask you a favour?

I do not know who this Munsell is. Is he your king?

Yes, of course you may. I shall carry it out, if I can.

He's a little more like God - or he's treated like him, anyway. He wrote the Rulebook a long time ago.

But how can a man be treated as a god? Is that surely not a great failing?

My world has a lot of great failings.

Did you believe this man to be god-like?

We never really knew what a god was.

But now that I do, yes, in a way.

That is most strange. Do you still believe in him now?
