Greetings everyone,
I know it's been a spell or two since I've written something personal in my lj, so I figured I'd quickly update as I'm killing time. Why am I killing time? Probably because the sewer in my neighbors townhouse (which is connected to mine) backed up last night and left me with four inches of disgusting water in my basement. Not only that, but I had several good suits from work stacked in garment bags on the floor. They are now destroyed by what I've deemed "yuck water." So now I'm wasting a fabulously gorgeous July day waiting for a plumber to arrive. I can't shower or run water until he gets here. He was supposed to be here at 8am. It is now 10am. I have to be at the gym to lift at 2. I can't win.
Okay, so what's new with Prodigy? Well, I'm enjoying my first official summer "off" since I was probably thirteen years old. First summer not working in nearly ten years! Woohoo! I'm definitely enjoying the teacher's schedule at the moment. However, my summer hasn't been all fun and games, because I've been taking graduate courses for my master's degree. I recently finished six credits-worth of classes--I'm getting my master's in Curriculum and Instruction--and am ready to relax. Good thing, too, because I'm leaving for Myrtle Beach this Friday. What better way to relax than to vegetate in a beach chair and read the new Harry Potter? Pretty hard to top, if you ask me.
I should be receiving my course schedule within the next couple days. I taught three grade levels of English last year; I really hope they pare me down to at least two. I'm tickled pink because I finally get my own classroom this year, instead of having to travel around on a cart. I plan on decorating my room with Harry Potter paraphernalia, even though it's banned from the curriculum in my district. I hope I retain my eleventh and tenth graders; I could do without the freshman. I don't believe any class could top my ninth graders from last term; hence, I don't want new ones. The great thing about teaching such a wide variety of ages is that I might get the same students again this year, only in a higher level English course. Anyway, I'm excited to begin my second year and hope it goes as smoothly as the first. I was voted "Favorite Teacher" in the yearbook this year by the student body, so I guess I'm doing something right.
For some reason unbeknownst to me, my bitterly sarcastic, mocking, self-effacing, sardonic classroom personality attracts kids like bees to honey. Maybe that's why I had no discipline problems this year. No one wanted to be the target of my supposedly silver tongue.
On to juicier gossip...
I posted a few months ago that I'm dating someone. That is true. For the first time in my life I'm ecstatically HAPPY with the object of my affection. Unfortunately, he's in Iraq right now. As an Army Ranger he does some crazy shit (Rangers are the most elite special forces unit in the Army), and I'm awfully proud of him. But here's the icing on the cake; he comes home to the United States in seventeen days! I'm filled to the brim with excitement and can hardly contain myself. The only downside is that I'm located in Pennsylvania, and he'll be restationed in Colorado. Thus, I'm driving his Jeep out to Colorado when I return from Myrtle Beach on July 23rd. It should be an incredible adventure to journey across the US like that. If I wasn't in such a hurry to see my beloved I'd probably dawdled on historic Route 66. Since I'm pressed for time I'll probably take I-70 the entire way from PA to CO. If you live along the way let me know; I'd love to stop and meet some of you. Just pull up a US map and locate the path of I-70. I do believe it crosses through several states and major cities, so I'll have ample opportunities to rendezvous with you. I just hope I an go it alone; right now the Ranger's step mother is planning on coming with me, but I hope she backs out. I covet the solitude of the drive; I need 'thinking' time and space to organize my thoughts and emotions after not seeing Ranger for over three months.
I've been foolishly daydreaming about the moment when his muscular arms will close around my body for the first time in months...I wish I could express to you the longing and stress that comes with being the other half of a military couple. I've done nothing but worry myself sick since he's been over there (he's been there for a year, but only three months of our relationship since the last time he had leave). I lived for his dead-of-night phone calls and sporadic emails, and I never thought I'd be the type to wait on pins and needles to hear from another person. To be perfectly honest, I'm most thankful for HP:1 chat than anything else. Spending so much time in chat--especially two years ago with Malfoy, Potion, Erroll, and Not!Potter--taught me how to be an excellent verbal communicator. Often times Ranger would email me and say, "Wow, I feel like I'm talking to you in person when you write!" With all of you, I learned how to foster intimate relationships via long distance hardships, and that proved a great benefit when trying to maintain a sense of normalcy with someone in combat half a world away. If anything, we're closer than we ever were. I don't think we would have made it if I didn't have that experience under my belt.
Another great attribute the Ranger possesses is his open mind when it comes to new things. Ladies and gents, I turned him into a hardcore Harry Potter fan. Although I didn't think it possible, I think he's more excited than me about the sixth book! He said one of the main reasons he can't wait to see me again is to simply talk HP with me. He has all of these theories (they're wrong, of course--but who am I to burst his bubble?) and hates Dolores Umbridge with a fiery passion. He knows nothing of the world of slash--and I'm not about to enlighten him--so when he said something about the centaurs having their way with her, I nearly fell off of my chair laughing. Oh, if he only knew the stories that came out of THAT little plot line...
Anyway, if you're along I-70 or live in the Colorado Springs area I will be venturing out that way. I'll most likely be in Colorado from July 26 to August 15, so hit me up if you're around. I'm not real sure how I'll explain to Ranger my visits with you, but I'll think of something!
I miss you all. Especially Erroll and Potion.
<3.
