Part 1 Jaime surveyed the city before him, the scarab scanning the police bands and his long range censors and infra red allowing him to see deep into the darkness.
"Hey Blue," a quiet voice spoke behind him.
Jaime jumped six foot into the air and turned around to face the voice. A young man was crouched on the side of the roof, red and black costume stretched over taught muscles. The man grinned and Jaime stared. The scarab pulled up an image of Robin and displayed it next to the man's face.
"Robin?" Jaime asked.
"That's twice in a week now that I've been called that, I'd think you people would take the time to learn my new identity," Tim answered wryly.
"Why didn't you tell me he was behind me?" Jaime growled at the scarab whilst shooting a mocking glare at Tim.
"The Robin posed no threat, he was recognised as an ally," the scarab answered.
"Ha, Khaji Da says you weren't a threat, take that you big scary Bat," Jaime teased Tim.
Tim leapt into the air, flipping gracefully to land behind Jaime, he grabbed Jaime's left wrist twisting his arm firmly but gently behind him and kicking out Jaime's legs. He knelt next to Jaime and leaned in to whisper in his ear.
"I'm always a threat Blue," Tim whispered, and even though Jaime couldn't feel it, he imagined Tim's breathe ghosting against his neck and shivered just as Tim stood up, "oh, and tag, you're it."
Tim shot a grapple hook across to the next building, jumped and ran. Jaime stood up and stared after him for a moment, before opening up his wings and leaping into the air after Tim.
Jaime chased the black and red shadow as it flitted gracefully across the rooftops. He let his thoughts wander, considering why Robin had come all the way out to Texas just to play a game of rooftop tag. Robin and he had been involved briefly, just after Robin had left the Titans and long before Jaime had. But it hadn't been serious, well, it hadn't been serious for Robin. Jaime had been left with a new reason to dislike the Caped community.
But now, chasing Robin over rooftops, Jaime could almost forget how easily his heart had been broken.
"Are you out of practice Blue?" Tim called back over his shoulder.
Jaime fired up boosters and put on some extra speed. He almost caught up when Robin dropped suddenly into an alley, Jaime had sped up even more, only to see Robin appear on a rooftop to his left. He only stopped for a second to consider how little sense that made before shooting off in pursuit again.
Although it was possible that he was crazy, Jaime had the feeling Robin was suddenly spending a lot more time in the air, almost like he was flying between jumps.
"Not Robin," the scarab supplied.
"I know he's not Robin anymore, but I haven't been paying attention to what's happening with the Capes in Gotham," Jaime snapped.
"Not Robin," it chirped again.
Just as Jaime was about to question it further Robin stopped mid-air, turned and grinned at him. He pulled up suddenly, only to be tackled from behind. He landed on a rooftop with a body on top of him, he quickly twisted around in order to pin the person to the ground. Robin smirked up at him.
"Shall we call it a draw?" Robin asked.
"Wait. What?" Jaime spluttered out.
He was tackled again and knocked onto his back.
"Hello Blue Beetle," a young green woman he recognised as Miss Martian smiled down at him warmly.
"M'gann?" Jaime managed to ask.
"The one and only," she offered a hand and helped him up, "how are you Blue?"
Jaime brushed himself off and stared at the pair.
"Rooftop tag? Pranks? Have you guys aged backwards?" He asked incredulously.
"By Martian standards I am still within my adolescent years, pranks and rooftop tag are still acceptable practices for me," M'gann answered with a wry smile.
"Okay, well, fine," Jaime conceded, "what's your excuse Boy Wonder?"
"Did you ever meet Nightwing, he's over 30 and still playing pranks," Tim argued, "plus, I'm fairly sure I never had a real childhood so I plan to make up for it now."
Jaime nodded and rolled his eyes. Tim reached out a tentative hand and rested it on Jaime's shoulder.
"Just like I'm going to make up for what I did to you," Tim added.
Jaime stilled in shock and glanced between the pair. M'gann smiled softly at Jaime and lifted up into the air and flew out into the night. Robin sighed and looked up to meet Jaime's eyes. The lenses on his mask were down and clear blue eyes stared out.
"Robin -" Jaime started.
"Tim, my name is Tim," Tim blurted out, "I can't... I don't know how to make it up to you, but I hope that's a start."
"Tim," Jaime repeated, sounding out the name, "look, you don't need to apologise for anything, we were young, and you left, it's okay."
"No Jaime, it's not okay, I used you and I hurt you and I'm so sorry," Tim sighed again and ran a hand through his hair.
"I had been warned about Bats and I still let myself trust you. It's my own stupid fault I got hurt," Jaime said caustically.
"I'm sorry," Tim repeated himself, at a loss for words.
"I know," Jaime retracted the armour around his face and smiled at Tim, "why don't we start again?"
Tim raised an eyebrow in confusion and Jaime just smiled again and offered his hand.
"Hi, I'm Jaime Reyes, also known as the Blue Beetle," Jaime said formally.
"Timothy Wayne -" Tim began as he shook Jaime's hand.
"Wait. Timothy Wayne? THE Timothy Wayne?" Jaime gasped.
"Oh no," was all Tim managed.
"Dios mio, I... wow. Wow. That is so awkward.. wow" Jaime mumbled.
"Why is it awkward?" Tim asked.
"Uh. Forget I said anything. Paco and Brenda are never going to believe this."
"Jaime, tell me what you are talking about?" Tim said in a voice that always got what it wanted.
"Ah, I may or may not have a crush on Tim Wayne," Jaime said softly, shuffling his feet.
Tim stared at Jaime for a moment, before bursting into laughter.
"Man, I feel like I'm fourteen again," Jaime sulked, "it's not that funny."
"But, aha, it is! You probably always thought, ha, 'I'll never be able to, ha, get with him' and, ahahah, you didn't even know you already had!"
Jaime pouted and forced down a laugh.
"Oh my god, have you fantasized about me?" Tim added breathless, clutching at his sides in laughter.
"I am never going to live this down am I?" Jaime hung his head and laughed softly.
"Nope, I doubt Paco and Brenda will let you forget it either."
"Who says I'm going to tell them?"
"I'll tell them myself, I'm happy to compromise my secret identity for something this amusing."
Jaime glared at Tim, only causing him to laugh harder.
"Shouldn't we go find Miss Martian, she must be getting bored?" Jaime asked lamely.
"Wouldn't you like my autograph first?" Tim teased.
"I am going to knock you out, and hand you in to the cops pretending you tried to rob a bank or something," Jaime's replied in an even tone.
"Fine, let's go get M'gann," Tim grinned, "I'm ready for another round of tag."
"You're it this time," Jaime shouted as he flew off.
Tim smiled to himself and chased after Jaime.
